WHAT IS RESTAURANT CONCEPT
A restaurant concept can be referred to as the overall theme or idea which is aimed at
defining a newly launched restaurant. Such a concept describes a number of components
associated with a restaurant, namely, the design of menu, the style of service, the décor of dining
room and the style or cuisines that will be offered within the premises of a restaurant (de Larrea,
Altin and Singh, 2019). In today's modern era where innovation and creativity have gained
support and guidance from people as well as government, a number of restaurants are formed on
the basis of personal experiences gained by chef or their interest within the area of practice. In
this regard, a number of elements or aspects are found to be acting as a source of inspiration for
the concept of restaurant. Such sources can be traditions, customs, values, beliefs, local
ingredients, families, heritage. Besides this, concept can also be demonstrated by the travel
experience, training or interest of a chef in Food & Beverage industry. The chefs may have
interest in a number of areas such as art, culture or science owing to which they may come up
with the concept of a restaurant. After all, food is an integration of all such things.
A restaurant concept includes an array of elements or aspects with a particular cohesive
tone. From the name of business to the colour of walls within the premises, every single and
small detail comes under the overall restaurant concept (Choosing a Restaurant Concept, 2019).
In this regard, the elements of such concept are briefly discussed below:-
Restaurant Name: The name of the restaurant should provide a clear description of the
types of food that the entity would serve. Such name should be simple, authentic, unique,
creative, relevant and memorable. There are a number of approaches which provide assistance in
choosing a name for restaurant but owners generally take inspiration from the signature dish,
location or a family member.
Menu Writing: The description of the foods that would be provided within restaurant can
be as literal as listing of the ingredients present in food and the manner in which they are cooked
or as poetic in the form of a brief illustration of an experience, abstract theory or visual image.
But such approach shall make sense in relation to the food as well as the overall theme of
restaurant.
Service Styles: While the service style of a restaurant may appear to be unrelated, the
type of service that is offered is directly associated with the restaurant concept in the manner that
it impacts upon the wholesome experience driven by diner. Some of the most well renowned

service types that may significantly affect the restaurant concept are Bistro, Fine Dining, Bar,
Buffet, Fast Casual, Mid Scale Dining, Food Truck etc.
Restaurant Decor and Ambiance: The wall colour, furniture, table settings, lighting,
décor and music play a significant role in determining the wholesome impact of the restaurant.
Thus, although food should be the prime focus of the restaurant, it is essential that some
significant decisions regarding decor are taken pretty early within the planning process.
