Complete this task based on the Ethical Trading Group case study organisation.
Case study information
One of the organisation’s purchasing officers John Francis, had a fall during work on
10th October 20XX. This has resulted in a lateral malleolus fracture to the right leg.
His work is usually based at a computer workstation at Head Office in Sydney. John
is a fulltime employee (38 hours) working from Monday to Friday with some
occasional travel required to suppliers (both interstate and international). Prior to the
incident his manager had discussed with you the need for John to undertake some
further training on the new IT system which has recently been implemented into the
purchasing team. For more information about John and his injury see Appendix 2.
Recently, the HR Manager has created a draft policy and procedure but needs your

This email is in regard to the review of the policy and procedures of the
company. After reviewing the policy, there are certain points that I would like to
bring to your notice. First of all, I would like to mention that the overall policy and
procedures are significant and I would like to highlight some of the strengths as
well as weaknesses of the same. As far as rehabilitation is concerned, the
strength is that the company will provide an injury management program. Another
strength of the same is that the employees within the company will get
compensation in case of an injury. But there are also certain weaknesses of the
same, such as in case of psychological injuries, no compensation will not be

off from work for more than seven days.
On the other hand, in case of Return to Work, the worker can join their work pre-
injury duties. Total incapacity refers to the condition wherein the employee is not
able to perform any kind of work. The strength for this is that the employee will be
provided leaves so that they can take rest. But the weakness for the same is that
there can be a case wherein the company does not have any replacement for that
employee. In order to ensure that the operations run smoothly, there are certain
legislative requirements that the company will be required to adhere to such as
the Worker’s Compensation Act 1987. Also, I would like to make some
suggestions in order to ensure that the policy and procedures are kept up to date.
First of all, it is recommended that the managers of the company should conduct
brainstorming sessions in order to identify new ideas that can be included in the
policy. It is also recommended that the managers should encourage their team

the employees of the company. This will help in improving the current policy and
procedure of the company. Lastly, to ensure that ETG maintains a relevant and
up to date policy, it is recommended that the company monitors the websites of

Before we complete a Return to Work (RTW) plan for John, it will be important that we perform a
risk assessment and adapt his work environment to ensure that he can carry out suitable duties
safely. He will be using crutches and cannot be seated for more than two hours at a time. This
could entail risks for John and his team member.
Here at ETG, it is our standard procedure to conduct a risk assessment so that staff are as
productive and comfortable as possible while they are returning to work. Please conduct a risk

Appendix 4: Briefing Notes (Injured worker)
Please supply the following information to the person playing the role of the injured worker.
NOTES – for role play participant
You are playing the role of John Francis a 40-year-old male. You are a purchasing officer at Ethical
Trading Group.
You recently suffered an injury at work. On Wednesday, 10 October at 10.00am, you were using a
ladder to reach some files which you were in the process of digitising as the team has a new IT
system. You were negotiating the ladder when you slipped from the rung and fell over a metre,
landing awkwardly on your right leg and sustaining a fracture. The incident was witnessed by the
other three purchasing officers who all gave their account of the incident showing that the
mechanism of injury was as you stated. You were taken to a local hospital at 10.30am where an X-
Ray was taken. The X-Ray confirmed that there was a lateral malleolus fracture to the right leg –
these injuries occur when the ankle twists or bends awkwardly and the inner (medial) side of the
ankle is unaffected; thus, confirming the mechanism of injury.
You also consented to, and did see, Ethical Trading Groups preferred doctor. Dr Kinsella reviewed
you and prepared a report. The report stated that a support boot (not cast) can be placed on your
ankle and that the use of crutches will assist you with mobility. You should avoid movement for the
first week after the incident. Dr Kinsella then made stipulations regarding your return to work and
supplied a Workers Compensation Medical Certificate with the following restrictions and
endorsements.
You will not be fit for work from 10 October to 17 October, inclusive.
You will see Dr Kinsella on 17 October to check progress and to see whether you can
commence suitable duties.
Clearance was given for the injured employee to commence suitable duties on the 18 October, with
the following restrictions:
Not to be seated in the same position for periods exceeding two hours.
Not to walk on the crutches up and down large number of stairs (one flight of stairs
maximum) or for a distance exceeding 100 metres.
For the period from 18 October to 18 November, not work for more than four hours per day.
Commence physiotherapy as soon as the support boot is removed on 18 November.
For this activity, the learner will facilitate a meeting with you and the rehabilitation provider to plan
your return to work. You will be asked to assist in recommendations for improving the return to
work plan.
There are some recommendations that can be made to my return-to-work plan in order
to ensure that it is flexible based on my condition. I would require a flexible chair at the
workplace so that my back does not hurt. Also, I want some leniency if I face any trouble at
the workplace such as pain or if I am uncomfortable, I would like the managers to give me a
day off. This is because if I continue working in the same condition, my pain would increase
and this can have a long-term impact on my overall health as an individual.

employee, a 40-year-old male.
