Work at Home Exercise: (to be
discussed in week 2)
Draw an Activity System Diagram (including information flow) for the
scenario below:
Scenario:
A customer brings his car to the car service department for service. He
also hands the car log book to the staff. A mechanic inspects the car. If
the car needs a minor service, he sends the car for minor service, and
then for quality control. Otherwise, he sends the inspected car for a
major service (note that once the service is finished (doesn’t matter
minor or major), a service log is filled and sent to quality control
department). Once the car is finished with the major service, the
mechanic checks the wheel alignment. If it is satisfactory, he sends the
car for quality control, otherwise he aligns the wheels before sending it
for quality control. If the quality check determines that the service
quality is not satisfactory, the car gets resent for inspection and further
service. Otherwise, the car gets returned to the customer along with a
service note.

Rich pictures
• Rich pictures set down what is considered important in the
situation.
• There are no formal rules, and the purpose is investigative,
not artistic
• Make sure that your rich picture shows:
• the stakeholders involved
• their purposes
• desires and fears (concerns)
• aspects of the environment and agreement/disagreement
of interests (what is problematic)

Task 1:
Draw a Rich Picture for the scenario below
Note: This exercise is assessable and your printed solution on
an A4 page is due in your workshop in week 3. Draw the rich
picture using software of your choice (eg, Microsoft Word,
Powerpoint etc), or hand draw and scan it into a word document.
Then print it.
Scenario:
The course profile specifies a certain book chapter needs reading.
A student looks up the book they would like to borrow on the library
book database, goes to the specified location in the library and
finds that the book is not available on the shelves.

Task 1

Task 2: Related to the assignment
The assignment of this course is due in week 9. Through workshops/labs of the
course, you will develop skills required to do the assignment. The context of the
assignment is the G train (public transport system) that runs from Helensvale
station to Broadbeach. And a proposed line extension to Burleigh Heads and then
the GC airport is next. [Full details of the 50% assignment will be released soon]
For this activity, spend 15 - 20 minutes to think about the following questions in
the context of the G train:
1. Identify processes for Queensland Rail (train owners) that could be
problematic or need improvement, draw a Rich Picture that captures the
issues that instigate the need for a new system (5 marks).
2. Draw an activity system diagram using BPMn (Business Process Modelling
notation from week 1 lecture) for which you have identified the need in your
Rich Picture. Your activity system diagram should show the activity system’s
key actors, main inputs, processes, data stores, outputs, and any material
flow. (for your 50% assignment).
