The paper is focused in the elaboration of the principles of the risk assessment and the
hazard analysis in my own workplace which is BHP Billiton. Along with that, the paper
analyses the impact of the Occupational Safety and Health Administrations and the other
controlling methods on the prevention of the workplace injuries. Apart from this, the paper
also analyses the current strategies that are employed in my workplace for the effective
management of the hazards related to the job tasks.
Principles of Risk Assessment in BHP Billiton:
The main principles for the safety of the employees inside the mentioned organization
are mentioned below:
 Strong emphasis on the safety rather than the productivity.

Impact of OSHA and the other controlling methods:
The Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (OSHA) and the other
controlling methods play a significant role in making sure that the employees have the proper
idea of the hazardous chemicals through the appropriate training of the colour coded systems,
alarms and the chemical information sheets (Osha.gov, 2019). In addition to this, OSHA
focuses on the production of the safety training to the employees of the organization in the
appropriate language and the accurate record keeping of the work related injuries. OSHA
enables the employees of the organization to achieve the personal protective equipment at

free of cost and also has notable amount of importance for the hearing exams and the medical
tests (McLaughlin, Hennebry & Haines, 2014). The strict implementation of OSHA forces
the organizations to publish an annual post injury and illness summary which makes sure that
each of the employees have the access to it and along with that, it forces the organizations for
the production of the notification within 8 hours of the workplace fatality (Friend & Kohn,
2018). Apart from OSHA, the other controlling methods are of great significance in making
sure that the employees have a risk free working conditions, can file confidential complaint
regarding the workplace safety and receives the copies of the workplace medical records of
them.
Criticism of BHP Billiton’s Strategy:
The mentioned organization is seen to play a significant role in the management of the
workplace injuries. As mentioned above, the organization has diversified methodologies in
place for the assessment of the various issues and the agents such as Aerosol sampling,
Biological monitoring, Chemical analysis of the samples, exposure risk profile, Heat stress,
ionising radiation, UV radiation, Vibration and Noise. Apart from that, the risk assessment
strategy of the mentioned organization is significant in the application of the differentiated
control methodology for the issues and the agents like the infectious diseases, fatigue
management, diesel particulate and the asbestos. Hence, it is pretty evident that the control
methodology of the organization plays a crucial in the effective management of the
workplace health and safety of the employees of the mentioned organization.

Being an employee of the production mining, it is expected that I will be exposed to
underground mining. I undertake the various types operation such as long wall mining,
continuous mining, room and pillar mining, blast mining, shortwall mining and retreat

mining. During my operations in the underground mining, I am responsible for the
conduction of the tasks such as lifting of the coals, digging in the coal mine and the transfer
of the coal. Three of the mentioned operations of mine was subjected to notable amount of
exposure to the coal mine and that was seen to have significant impact on my health. I was
subjected to notable amount of dangers such as rock burst, outburst, roof collapse, gas
poisoning, suffocation and gas explosions. Apart from that, I faced the adverse impact of
the after damp and the stink damp as well. However, three of the dangers that had the
larger impact on me compared to the other ones, are the white damp, black damp, fire
damp along with severe back pain. The impact of the above mentioned issues were
significant in my operations and were responsible for the decrement of my efficiency.
However, it is expected that the measures cited by me have the potential to improve my
condition and increase my efficiency as a production mining employee.
