SPORT AND THE LAW
Introduction
The health safety is a major important factor that pertains to the various areas of sport
and fitness of sport person before, during and after the game is very important as well. It is
critical that the various types of the risk safety programs are run in a very pertinent manner so
that health risk of the sportspersons are not hampered. The different types of risk safety
programs and safety pertaining to an athlete’s safety and fitness are important that it should
be managed by the sports coach in a very pertinent manner (Adams, Scarneo and Casa 2017).
Establish the context
As a coach, Steve was once managing a local football team and the club had almost
more than forty five persons practicing day in day out. Out of that, Steve had to select
a team of 11 players who will be playing the next match, at the club level. It was
important that the only the best players, as in the best performing players were
selected only and it is very important that the fit players are only ones who are chosen
for the match. In the pre-season sessions – it was pertinent that the various types of
the drills and the exercises as well as the physical therapy sessions were undertaken
by each of the players that would help get fit as the match day progresses. In this
situation, a very good player who has a good record of performing well in the club
matches in the previous season was in the list as well. His name was Mark and is
playing for the club for last 3 years but somehow, the coach found out that he is out
of practice and fitness as well. The various important regimes were planned for each
of the sport persons to achieve it, by the quality standard and the coach trained
everyone along with Mark, in an imperative manner. Steve found out that the
equipment that are used in the club during the preparation phase and the pre-season

warm ups are faulty and are lacking as well.
Identify the risks to which the club and its people are exposed.
The other clubs in the proximity are equipped with great and more advanced
technologies while the club, where Steve is currently working with, lacks most of
modern day equipment that is required to make the fitness tests and the training
sessions of the players, feasible in a proper manner. The risks to which the club and
its people are exposed to are – heath safety risks, the management risks and the
environmental risks. The various types of the health safety risk posed to the players
here are injuries, lack of proper training thus causing more complex acute and chronic
body imbalances. The environmental risks are posed by the lack of proper
infrastructure and the fault wires that was found open and lying on the ground by
Steve, was a potential environmental hazard as well. The other risk that is mentioned
in the context that Mark is a good played but as he is clearly unfit as mentioned by the
physical therapist but as his father holds a strong position in the local government, he
has made it clear to Steve that Matter should play and Steve is in a state of conflict.
Analyse the risks by considering the sources of risk, existing controls, likelihood
and consequences of the level of risk that exist.
The environment and the health safety risks if they are present and they continue to be
present in the upcoming times as well – it is critical to be understood that it would
certainly lead to some kind of hazard to the players and that the reputation of the club
will be lost as well the health safety risks of the staffs would be disrupted as well.
Moreover, in the case of Mark, if Steve allows him to play – then it would breach the
ethics breach and evoke various other socio-political issues as well and it would also
create the opportunity for similar cases in the future as well. There will be disruption

of both law and ethics pertaining to the legal framework.
Evaluate the risks to determine whether the risk is acceptable or unacceptable.
The first risk that pertains to the health safety as well as the environmental and the
infrastructural parameters and the risks are still acceptable somewhat (except for the
immediate health risks) and can certainly and specifically be and can be managed
with proper type of strategies. The second one of the case, where the powerful and
influential father of a football player is pressurizing the coach of the club and the
team – to take his son surely in the match and this is a socio-political risk that is quite
unacceptable and step must be taken pertinently to solve the same.
Treat the risks to reduce, avoid, transfer or finance them.
In order to address the first risk - the risk management procedures and policies as well as the.
Legislative requirements in terms with the environmental parameters are to addressed as well.
Secondly, the insurance that the National Risk Protection Program is offering must be at
place. The lack of infrastructure and the lack of the proper safe practice grounds is a question
and it is to be understood – an collaboration of a risk management officer with the coach and
the other admistrators of club is important to promote the safety of the players. For the
second risk, the legislation and the legislative strategies are important to transfer the risks.

Conclusion
The complains and the various issues of the player must be heard and listened to by
the attending coach and the same must be addressed in a pertinent manner. It is important to
understand that the various types of the loop holes and the gaps pertaining to ineffective pre
match preparations, any cause of worry for the sportspersons, any issues with the warm up
phases and the problems that are disturbing the subjects - must be observed properly and the
right actions must be action (Ofosu and Kotey, 2019).
