A Patient Focused Approach to Care
During my previous placements, I understood the importance of involving patients in their care. I
always listened to my patients’ requirements and informed them about the necessary information
regarding their health. Every time I attended a patient I ensured that I provided them with
respectful care that was responsive to their values and preferences to influence patient outcomes.
I remember when a female patient came to our facility with a broken thigh bone. I assessed her
situation and identified that my task was to monitor her condition. However, due to the patient’s
cultural beliefs, she requested to be attended to by a female nurse. I, therefore, took the action to
refer her to a female nurse and the results were tremendous because she was satisfied with care. I
believe that I acted according to the nursing standard of practice that requires a nurse to engage
in therapeutic and professional relationships with their patient through effective communication
and respect of values and culture.
A Positive Approach to Ongoing Self-Education and Skill Development
Nurses need to keep learning throughout their professional nursing careers. Lifelong nursing is
believed to give nurses the necessary knowledge and critical thinking skills that can help in
solving the several clinical issues encountered in healthcare. Patients come from different places
with different conditions and health complications. I had never attended to a patient with a
fractured bone like the one I mentioned above. I remember I was still a new student nurse and I
did not have the required experience. I had to practice self-education and watch experienced
practitioners perform their duties to improve my education and skills. There are situations when
patients come to the hospital with conditions never known before. I am self-motivated and I am

always trying to improve my skills and knowledge through continuous learning. This is in line
with the nursing standard of practice that requires nurses to maintain their capability of practice
by using a lifelong learning approach to enhance their professional growth.
A Positive Approach to Change and Diversity
Change and diversity are important in nursing because it allows healthcare practitioners to
administer safe and quality care. Diversity includes gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity,
culture, disability, and religion among others. Hospitals receive patients from diverse
backgrounds and they all deserve the best available care. The aim of care must be to avoid harm
and ensure patient safety according to the ethical principles of beneficence and non-maleficence.
I have always proven to be a flexible person who is always willing to embrace any positive
changes and respect diversity. In my previous placement, I had the opportunity to work in a
community outreach program. Being a minority nurse, I was scared of discrimination because of
my lack of cultural awareness. Nursing codes of ethics require that a nurse provide accurate and
culturally competent care to patients. Nursing standards of practice also require that nurses
engage in professional and therapeutic relationships. I, therefore, had to change my approach and
try to understand the culture of my patients. By changing my approach and being positive to
change and diversity, I became culturally competent and offered quality care to my patients.
A Flexible, Innovative Team Oriented Approach to Service Delivery
A team-based approach to care is very important because it encourages collaboration between
different healthcare professionals thus improving service delivery and consequently health
outcomes. Collaboration and teamwork in nursing also enhance accountability because everyone
is equally held accountable for the success of care delivery. Previously I used to work alone and

this undermined the spirit of teamwork. An example was when a diabetic patient came to the
hospital and I decided to work alone without incorporating other members of a multidisciplinary
team. The patient was not satisfied with the care and it is not something I am proud of. I had to
change my approach and I believe that I am now a team worker. Nursing code of ethics requires
that a nurse maintains a collaborative relationship with their co-workers. Nursing standards of
practice also require a nurse to develop nursing care plans through collaborative practice to come
up with goals, actions, timeframes, and contingencies. I have learned that nurses always have a
common goal to ensure effective service delivery.
