RATIONALE
Care is the most essential aspect for a nurse. Their primary responsibility is to take proper
care of the patients and ensure their well-being. Sister Roach’s 6C’s of caring (2013) provides
the framework for the nurses to provide efficient and competent care to the patients, ensuring
their well-being, treating them with enough care and compassion, interacting with them and
committing themselves to deliver best health outcomes of the patients along with their
family(Baillie, 2015). According to her, the nurses in the healthcare organizations, take care of
the patients not just because it is their duty to do so. They care because they are human beings
and it is the natural and intrinsic trait of humans to support each other(Villeneuve et al, 2016).
Compassion means being sensitive and empathetic to others. The nurse should show an
act of kindness towards the patients and also should be compassionate and empathetic in their
approach towards the patient, put themselves in their condition, try to understand their condition.
They should be able to show kindness in their attitude which makes the patient feel respected and
valued(Baillie, 2017). It is the ability of the nurse to understand how the patient wants to be
treated. They should sit beside them,greet them with a smile, hold their hands and assure them
that everything will be fine.
According to Roach, the nurses are the backbone of any health care organization since
they are directly involved in patient care and ensure well-being of them through highly
competent, compassionate patient centered care. They should be committed to provide high
quality and efficient care to the patients(Fowler, Tschudin & Peter, 2016). They should have
adequate skills and expertise to deal with any situation that arise both professionally and
logically; and continue to provide effective care to the patients. They should also be experienced

enough to understand the deteriorating condition of a patient and assist the family of the patient
to prepare for the upcoming events. They should explain the patients about the medictions in a
language which is easy for them to understand. If a nurse is competent enough, they should be
able to assess and judge the condition of the patients well, apply their clinical decision making
skills to prepare a care plan based on the needs of the patient.
The confidence of the nurse is directly linked with their competence. If the nurse is
competent, knowledgeable and experienced, their confidence will be much better than the nurses
who are not experienced enough. It also foster a trusting relationship between the nure and the
family of the patient, they are more assured to know that their loved ones are being treated by an
expert and competent nurse. The nurse who are confident have faith in their abilities and always
ensure positive health outcomes of the patient(Bradshaw, 2016).
The nurse should exhibit consciousness in their actions and their behaviour towards the patients
and families. Their first priority should always be the patients and their needs. They should
beleive that every patient is different from the other, and their ability to cope up with stress and
handle the difficult situation is also different. So the nurses should approach the patients
accordingly, they should see the patients as an individual and understand the person as a whole,
giving respect to their human and moral rights.
The nurses should be dedicated and committed towards the well being of the patients and
also support their family. They should never compromise with patient care, no matter what issues
arises in their personal and professional life. They should continuously work on their skills,
upgrade their knowledge and expertise to promote the quality of health care and improve the
patient experience and satisfaction level. They should be also committed to provide a safe and

secured environment for the patients to fasten their recovery and healing, ensure that they are
getting proper medications.
The last and most important aspect of Roach’s C’s of caring is comportment, It is the
professional presentation of the nurse to the patients or other staffs which is based on attitude,
behavior or appearance. The nurse must exhibit professionalism in their attitude, looks, actions
and the way they talk. This professionalism helps the patient and their families to trust the nurse
even more. They should respect the patient and value their opinions and feelings.
In Conclusion, it can be said that Roach’s 6C’s of caring has made a significant
contribution in the field of nursing as it has given a new definition of caring and also stated the
importance of the nurses to take effective care of the patient to ensure their best health outcomes
as well support the families by assuring them about their loved ones.
