RATIONALE
Care is the most essential aspect for a nurse. Their primary responsibility is to take proper
care of the patients and ensure their well-being. Sister Roach’s 6C’s of caring(Roach, 2013)
provides the framework for the nurses to provide efficient and competent care to the patients,
ensuring their well-being, treating them with enough care and compassion, interacting with them
and committing themselves to deliver best health outcomes of the patients along with their
family. According to her, the nurses in the healthcare organizations, take care of the patients not
just because it is their duty to do so. They care because they are human beings and it is the
natural and intrinsic trait of humans to support each other.
Compassion means being sensitive and empathetic to others. The nurse should show an
act of kindness towards the patients and also should be compassionate and empathetic in their
approach towards the patient, put themselves in their condition, try to understand their condition.
They should be able to show kindness in their attitude which makes the patient feel respected and
valued(Tomescu-Dumitrescu, 2016). It is the ability of the nurse to understand how the patient
wants to be treated. They should sit beside them,greet them with a smile, hold their hands and
assure them that everything will be fine(Pérez et al, 2019). Compassion is one of the most
important aspect of nursing. Compassion requires the nurses to put themselves into the shoes of
the other, understand their feelings, feel their condition and show empathy towards the patients.
Its about giving respect to their feelings and opinions and treating them as they want to be
treated. It means that the nurse should be with the patient all the time, in their sufferings and
pain. They should show empathy and compassion in their attitude when interacting with the
patient,make them comfortable and relaxed and also making them feel that their feelings are

respected and valued. The nurse should follow the NMBA standards and guidelines to provide
efficient care to the patients. According to the NMBA standards for nursing, it requires the
nurses to engage in therapeutic relationship with the patients, communicate effectively with them
respecting theor dignity, cultural values and beliefs. They should provide both mental and
emotional support to the patients and should advocate in a manner which does not violate the
person’s dignity, autonomy and moral rights((Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia -
Professional standards, 2020).
According to Roach, the nurses are the backbone of any health care organization since
they are directly involved in patient care and ensure well-being of them through highly
competent, compassionate patient centered care. They should be committed to provide high
quality and efficient care to the patients. They should have adequate skills and expertise to deal
with any situation that arise both professionally and logically; and continue to provide effective
care to the patients. They should also be experienced enough to understand the deteriorating
condition of a patient and assist the family of the patient to prepare for the upcoming events.
They should explain the patients about the medictions in a language which is easy for them to
understand. If a nurse is competent enough, they should be able to assess and judge the condition
of the patients well, apply their clinical decision making skills to prepare a care plan based on the
needs of the patient. According to the NMBA standards, a nurse should be able to think critically
and analyse the condition of the patient, conduct comprehensive assessment, develop a care plan
based on the evidence based approach and evaluate outcomes for informing nursing practice.
They should conduct assessment in a holistic manner keeping in mind of their cultural
background and religious beleifs. They should create the care plan based on the resources that
are available to them and apply assessment techniques which are systemically relevant and

provide accurate information and result. The nurse should be proficient enough to monitor the
progress of the patient and revises the plan according to the requirement of the patient. They
should also be able to ensure safety and security of the patient, by providing them a clean and
hygienic environment which will facilitate their quick recovery along with delivering effective
timely direction and supervision to ensure that delegated practice is safe and correct(Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia - Professional standards, 2020).
In Conclusion, it can be said that Roach’s 6C’s of caring has made a significant
contribution in the field of nursing as it has given a new definition of caring and also stated the
importance of the nurses to take effective care of the patient to ensure their best health outcomes
as well support the families by assuring them about their loved ones.
