Road accident problem in UAE
Executive summary
The purpose of this report to analyse the cause of road accident in UAE and the recent
regulation that has been passed for reducing the rate of road accident. Psychological, social
and administrative factors are being described in the following essay. The frequent challenges
along with effective recommendation have also been suggested in this report.

Introduction
With the rapid expansion of science and technology, there has been increase in the
possession of automobile. Along with the increase in the automobiles, there is also increase
cases of road morbidity. Fatalities due to road accident ranks fifth among the other public
health issues. The rate is quite high with 37.1 death per 100000 population, the account of
injuries are also quite high with 21 percent of the deaths in the country. Due to the high
incident of roadway accidents, there has been an increased stringency in the rules and
regulations regarding road traffic. This report is going to explores the issues pertaining the
rising road accident in UAE.

Background
There can be various ways that results in the road accidents, some of the common
factors are distracted drovers, irrational speeding, increased section of drunk driving, reckless
driving, rain or snow. Owing to the rapid expansion of road construction and increase of
vehicles, road accidents has becomes a serious problem in UAE (Alhmoudi et al., 2017). It is
the second cause of mortality after the cardiovascular attack. Reasons for the rise of road
accidents are also due the discovery of oil reserves in the Middle East. After the discovery of
oils reserves, there has been increased proliferation of economy especially in terms of income
per-capita.
Factors responsible for road accident
Road accidents do not always cause due to the fault of the drivers alone. Sometimes the
psychological or the environmental factors are also responsible for the increased incident of
the road accidents. Factors like age, hearing, vision, fatigue, prone to alcohol or any oher
drug can cause the road accident. Psychological factors like intelligence, personality, social
maturity, arousal, and risk taking behaviour are also the cause for road accidents. Along with

the psychological factors, social factors are also responsible for deploying road accidents.
Community involvement and awareness about the road accident also affects the incidence
road accident. The estimated loss due to fatalities and injuries reaches the AED to about 20
billion annually. The economic costs incurred in the event of road accident amounts to 2.5%
of the UAE’s GDP (Li, et al., 2017). Another factor that leads to the rise in road accidents is
also due to the increased ownership of car.
Proper regulation
Owing to this kind of scenario the country has formulated programmes and policy fr
reducing the incidents of car or road accidents. The parameters which have precedence are
the social factors because if the community is not socially aware about risks and the
challenges road accident has then no amount of legislation can stop the increasing road
accidents. Various awareness programmes have been conducted which have led to the
reduction in the morbidity and mortality rate. The Minister of Interior and National Transport
Authority have been the lead agencies and the Ministry of Health is a collaborator
(Mohammed, 2015). Recently in article Major General Ali Khalfan AL Dhaheri, the director
of the central operations sector of the Abu Dhabi Police, ADP, stated that due to the
application of Traffic safety strategy 2016-2020, there has been reduced cases of road
accident (Hazarmerdi et al., 2016). Measures were taken along the lines of traffic safety,
ambulance, police aviation, crises and disaster management. He also promises that effective
and pro-active measures will be taken to treat the increase events of road accidents. Apart
from many other causes of road accident road design has been of the cause that results in road
accidents.
Challenges
The remedies that are being formulated to cure the case of road accident suffer from
an innate flaw, which is unlike biological problem the problem the issues do not have

immediate medical cure. Rather the social problem needs to go through a trial and error
programme. In order to lower the number of the car crash or minor accident it is important to
have access to proper data. Road accidents are not always characterised by death of the
person involved in it. There are minor accidents, and then there are fatal cases. For proper
implementation remedies, proper and systematic record of the accidents needs to be filed.
However after the implementation of stringent laws the incident of road accidents has
reduced but this scenario is not uniformly spread. For instance the case of Oman still accord
with the worst situation of road accidents (Hamad, 2016). Thus, the need for data remains one
of the integral part of the problem.
Recommendation
In order to cut-down, car accidents it is most important to make people aware about
the risk involved if they do not abide by the safety rules of traffic regulation. Driving in the
state of intoxication can result in fatal situation. Thus, education and knowledge about the
various from of traffic rules must be implanted at the community level. Education on the
surface level will not fetch any change if the ethical foundation is not built along with it.
Inhibition of the alcohol or any consumption of drug not only ruptures the social fabric but
also increases the cost of social fatalities. Thus, individual must also inculcate proper habits
on the individual level. On the administrative better and improved techniques should
implemented for collecting data (Taamneh et al., 2017). Media can be an effective tool for
generating information. It is very important to provide accurate information instead of
bragging or dramatizing the event. Thus, the kind of information, which is proved, should
more specific because the condition of the incidents of road accidents has not changed
universally. Still there are certain key areas, which record high incident of road accident.

Conclusion
Thus it can be concluded that road accident results from various factor that are not
outcome of the individual alone. There are social factors, psychological factors ad also
environmental factors. Human factors like speeding or rash driving can results in road
collision, being in a state of intoxication can also be one of the factors for road accidents. The
built of road or the poor maintenance of vehicle could lead to road collision. However, the
cases of road accidents are not limited to the rich states because this incident of road crash
has been reported in the poorer state as well. Thus, proper measures should be taken to record
the number of road accidents and the effective measure to be taken to inform the potential
about its potential affects. Before becoming aware of the issues of risk, one should also
inculcate ethical principles that would inhibit them from the getting intoxicated, speeding, or
rash driving.
