Abstract: The following research is a literature review undertaken to evaluate the current issues
of road traffic injuries and disability prevention in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Five articles
were selected pertaining to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Driver behavior of speedy and
reckless driving has been implicated to cause such injuries resulting in damage to neck, head and
extremities. Adopting an integrated framework of education, engineering and monitoring is
essential for road traffic prevention. Considering the high rates of such injuries in Saudi Arabia,
a camera monitoring system was adopted resulting in beneficial outcomes which may considered
during future public health interventions, Overall, this research will pave the way for future
adoption of road traffic preventive methods resulting in a healthier nation and reduced mortality
rates.

Introduction:
According to the Police Department and Ministry of Interior (MOI), researched by Lee and Al-
Mansour (2018), a total of 460, 488 injuries were caused due to road traffic accidents in the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the year 2017, which have further resulted in deaths and fatal
damages amounting to 7489 and 33, 139 respectively. Road accidents can result in detrimental
health outcomes in the form of injuries such as wounds, bruises, cust as well as damaged limbs,
life-threatening injuries to the spine, paralysis, internal hemorrhages, loss of wellbeing and
quality of life and even death. If left untreated road traffic injuries can result in high mortality
rates and loss of quality of life and productivity in a nation. Hence, the following research aims
to review the current issues of road traffic injuries and disability prevention in the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia, to further pave the way for future research on public health interventions.

Discussion:
As researched by Lee and Al-Mansour (2018), a total of 460, 488 injuries were caused due to
road traffic accidents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the year 2017. Mansuri et al., (2015)
researched that road 83.4% of admissions to the trauma care department were contributed by
road traffic injuries of which neck, head, lower and upper body extremities were reported to
acquire highest injuries. The research by Mohammed and Bromfield (2010) indicated that
adherence to reckless, speedy and aggressive driving practices are one of the primary causes of
road traffic accidents. The review conducted by Ghaffar and Ahmed (2015), reported that an
integrated approach encompassing stringent traffic rule enforcement, adequate engineering of
roads, provision of timely services for trauma and emergency management coupled with frequent
monitoring of traffic and automobile movements can be used to prevent road traffic injuries.
Alghnam et al., (2017) however, examined the reduction of such injuries and resultant positive
health outcomes after installation of a road traffic camera monitoring and ticketing system.
