1ROLE CONCEPT
Introduction
Healthcare is an important aspect when it comes to uplifting the livelihood of people
and general health care. The healthcare professionals are not only involved in treatment and
diagnosis of diseases but they are also involved in health promotion and awareness among
people. However, I think for an efficient health care assistance there are role concepts
involving basic human needs, time management and understanding cultural diversity among
the people. One of the vital parts of health care management and providing quality care
bringing patients and professionals together to form a collaborative environment in the
society (Renedo et al., 2015). Apart from efficient collaborative environment, timely action in
addressing the required situation is important (Weller, Boyd & Cumin, 2014). In the given
assignment I have chosen the topic Time management by Laura Vanderkam I would be
discussing about the in detail in the following paragraphs.
1. Why did you choose the topic/video that you did?
In this assignment I have chosen a TED talk based on time management by Laura
Vanderkam and I have chosen this topic because I believe that time management is an
important role concept not only in professional health care practice but also in personal life.
According to Weller, Boyd and Cumin (2014), time management goes hand in hand with the
collaborative engagement in terms of health care but also helps in timely treatment for the
patient. From the organization’s point of view the concept of time management is important.
It is found in research that the lack of proper time management is the pressing factor in terms
of Occupational Stress and Job turnover (Mosadeghrad, 2013). Our lives are determined by
the daily life activities, coping up with stress and leading a healthy life style, therefore I
believe that management of time is an essential aspect contributing to all these factors.
Furthermore, balancing professional and personal domain is also a vital part in healthcare.

2ROLE CONCEPT
For better organizational skills and for making efficient decision strategic planning of time is
one of the bases for running a successful organization (Said, 2014).
2. What were the important points emphasized?
In the TED Talk given by Laura Vanderkam about time management, I was amazed
by natural flow of the talk and it was not imposing like most other motivational talks, where
we not able easily comprehend on the topic. However, the main points which were
emphasized were based on the fact of it depends upon us how to manage our time. It is upon
to decide what are our main priorities and goals in life. Furthermore, it in the speech, Laura
Vanderkam, has emphasized on the fact that time is highly flexible and elastic. One of the line
in the speech was thought provoking, that – We don’t build the lives we want by saving time,
we build the lives we want and then time saves itself. This line made me think about the
essence of time management and how it can be applicable in health care aspects. To balance
the work between the personal life and professional life is important, and if we prioritize our
works then we can do all the things we want irrespective to the time available. According to
Goetsch & Davis, (2014), effective time management can improve the team work ability and
makes goal oriented approach.
3. How does this correspond to the course concepts?
From the course material I have learnt about the way we should handle and prioritize
our time and the speech in TED talk was in accordance. Therefore, in case of health care
management there are different aspects where our time gets wasted, these are known as “time
robbers” therefore, to avoid the wastage of time or ‘robbing of time’, it is important to make
our work on the basis of our goals and priorities. The fact we have 24x7 =168 hours in a
week, and it is our choice to spend the remaining 72 hours doing whatever we want as per our
choice, effort. The module explains the concept and importance of time management, and in

the speech it has given a domain to develop ourselves in our free time. There are so many
things we want to do but we cannot because “We do not have”, which is the common excuse
we give, but that is not true as per the speech, we do have a ground to do whatever, we want
to in our lives. We can develop our careers and at the same time we can manage our free time
accordingly.
4. Can you relate to this on a personal level? Write about an experience you endured
or witnessed. Do you agree or disagree with the message in the video?
Yes, I can relate to that on a personal level, the talk was very simple and was quite
relatable I personal as well as in professional aspects of life. From my experience, I never to
believe on the fact that time can be stretchable, in our world of distraction and social media, it
is very difficult to bring out free time that will be useful. For example, I always wanted to
learn some craft work, but the challenging part was finding out time. Utilization of free time
is a key method to develop ourselves professionally as well as personally. The message in the
video enables me to think that I can be in my own control in time and working schedules.
According to a current research by Panek (2014), it was found that the low self-control is
related with the uncontrolled use of internet and social media, furthermore, the process
accompanied self-guilt as well. I agree with the message that utilizing and prioritizing our
work is very important, however, sometimes many things do not fall in to place for that we
should procrastinate. However, I feel it is okay to relax and sit back enjoy our social life but
that should affect our priorities and goals.
5. Has viewing the topic challenged your philosophies or beliefs? 5. Did you find the
message powerful/challenge
Yes, the topic has challenged my philosophy relating to what I used to think about the
concept of time and its management. I feel that utilization of time especially during the free

time is very challenging and from the speech, I could understand that it is not about how big
effort I put, but is about how I make things consistent. As Laura Vanderkam says that “small
moments have great power”. “There is time”, for everything we want to do in life, and only if
we assort our priorities. Apart from personal achievement, time management is an important
aspect of patient care and proper timely saves many lives (Voshall, Dunn & Shelestak, 2013).
In alleviating stress and frustration time management is also an important concept
(Chernomas & Shapiro, 2013).
Conclusion
Therefore, from the above discussion, I have discovered that health care promotion
and developing skills to make a better approach in terms of prevention of diseases and
improving the quality of life among patients it is important to understand the concept of time
management, as time management not only helps in better patient care and treatment, but
better time management enables us to do things for ourselves, for our own personal growth
and also reduce stress in life.
