Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare organization as they are directly involved in the
wellbeing of the patients. They helps to ensure better health outcomes of the patient by
delivering patient centered, holistic and compassionate care, considering the needs of the
patient, showing respect to their opinions and values. This paper aims to provide an in-
detailed explanation of the duties and responsibilities of the nurse in an aged care, along with
the importance of interpersonal and intercultural communication of the nurses with the elder
people.
The primary duty of a nurse in an aged care is to take care of the disabled and elderly
patients, listen carefully to their issues and concerns, check the family medical history, assess
the condition of the patient through physical observation, perform regular monitoring of the
vital signs. They collect all the informations and apply their clinical reasoning abilities and
decision making skills to prepare a care plan for the patient, which will satisfy their needs and
ensure positive health outcomes. They also ensure safety and security of the patient by
providing a safe, clean and hygienic environment for them which facilitates their fast
recovery and healing. The nurses prescribe medications to the patients in a timely manner and
at the right dosage.
The nurses are not only involved in patient care and disgnosis, but they also look forward to
build a therapeutic relationship with the elderly patients through effective communication and
interaction with them. They educate them about the risk factors that are associated with a
particular health issue and assist them in making healthier life choices by bringing about a
positive change in their lifestyle. Interpersonal communication is an important aspect in
nursing and is found to improve overall patient experience, reducing the hospital stay and
ensuring better health outcomes. Often the older people who gets admitted in hospital are
confused and in a state of shock. So it is the responsibility of the nurses to communicate with

the them and assure them. Moreover, a proper communication with the patient helps the
nurses to identify their health isssues and concerns and prepare the care plan based on that.
The nurses are aware of the cultural background of the patient and seek proper knowledge
about their culture by interacting with the patients or through friendly interrogation. They
give respect and value to their culture and ethics, build a friendly therapeutic relationship
with the patient, so that the patient can share the highly confidential informations regarding
their culture and religion without any hesitation.
I think it is very important for the nurses to listen to the needs and concerns of the elderly
patient, understand their problem, provide mental and emotional support to them. This will
make them assured and relieve their stress, and ensure spiritual healing and also make them
velief that their feelings are being respected and their opinions are getting valued. Some
nurses does not take proper care of the older patient and often neglect them, which in turn,
affects their well-being as they feel lonely and depressed, thus delaying the overall recovery
process. It also results in poor patient satisfaction level.
In conclusion it can be said that the nurses play the pivotal role in the aged care and have
huge responsibility as they are directly invoved in the wellbeing of the older patients. They
require sufficient skills and expertise to provide efficient healthcare service to the patients
and should be able to the clinical reasoning abilities and decision making skills in preparing
care for the patients. Apart from these, good interpersonal skills are also essential in nursing
for better interaction with the patients. They should also give respect to the values and
opinions of the patient and show empathy and compassion in their attitude.
