Performing ROM and Isometric Exercises
Topic of Study
This paper is specific on performing Rom and Isometric exercises as the topic of
discussion. Rom exercises are also termed as the range of motion exercises. A teaching plan is
essential in the performance of ROM exercises due to their significant role in blending joints
such as elbows, shoulders, and knees. In other words, ROM movement enables one to decrease
the pain, strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints and work with minimal discomfort after
suffering from joint injury, undergoing surgery or experiencing a movement-related pain. There
are three types of ROM exercises namely, passive, active-assistive and the active range of
motion exercises. The passive range of exercises are good for joints which have remained
inactive either due to paralysis or injury. The patient in this case shall not perform the
movements themselves. Instead, the therapist (Nurse) shall move the body part around the stiff
joint thus stretching the muscles and reminding them how to move correctly. For the active-
assistive ROM exercises, the activities of performance are partly done by the patient and partly
by the therapist. Active ROM exercises involves very little assistance from the therapist (TML,
2018). On the other hand, Isometric exercises are contractions made on a particular muscle or
group of muscles (Edward & Laskowski, 2018). Even though Isometric exercises concentrate at
one point, a teaching plan is essential is such an area as they play a significant role in
maintenance and building of strength, management of obesity and back-pain relief (Zelman,
2018). There are numerous types of isometric exercises. However, this paper targets to bring
forth only three categories which are relevant to the target audience i.e. 60-year-old patient.
Firstly, the low squat whereby an individual stands with the feet about shoulder-width apart
(Kuslikis, 2015). After that, the individual squats until the thighs are parallel to the floor. The

person then tries to squeeze the feet together instead of maintaining the position. Secondly is the
self-arm wrestling whereby the right arm is bend at a right angle and grabbed with the left arm.
The patient will then try to push the arms together as hard as possible. Finally, there exist the
prayer rose where palms are placed together with the elbows either pointing towards the ground
or flaring. The hands are then pressed together as hard as possible (Kuslikis, 2015).
Chosen Audience
The chosen audience for this report is a 60-year-old Spanish patient. The patient has
difficulties in understanding the English language. However, this topic is relevant to the patient
as performance of isometric and ROM exercises play a vital role in management of old-age
related health complications. For instance, isometric and ROM exercises play a significant role
in the management of the heart diseases. The exercises strengthen the heart muscles thus
lowering the blood pressure and reducing the amount of bad cholesterol thus enhancing blood
flow and promoting effective functioning of the heart. Furthermore, the exercises reduce one’s
likelihood of dying from stroke (Zelman, 2018). The exercises also help in controlling type ii
diabetes through the reduction of body weight, improvement of insulin sensitivity and
improvement of the blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Reduction of weight through the ROM
exercises play a double role in controlling obesity.
How the Chosen Topic Recognizes and Respect the Uniqueness of the Spanish Culture
Music and dance are one of the most commonly practiced Spanish culture (Chepkemoi,
2017). The music and dance activity is greatly influenced by the diverse cultural groups in the
country leading to distinct dancing styles. As we all know, different dancing styles require
different body movements. Therefore, the performance of ROM exercises is a strategic approach
in promoting easy joint movement consequently recognizing, respecting and enhancing the

Spanish dancing culture. Spanish culture also entails musical instruments such as guitarro,
bandurria, and castanets. Such instruments call for easy movement of joints in order to promote
good music. Therefore, the performance of ROM exercises is respectful and promotion of the
Spanish musical culture. The major sporting activity in Spain is football. The country is popular
through the La Liga being termed as the best football competition in the world. Some of the
famous football clubs in the country include Barcelona and Real Madrid. Most significantly, it is
vital to acknowledge the fact that football is one of the sporting activity which calls for Isometric
exercises (Valle, 2019). Football requires flexibility among the players to avoid accidents during
the match. Furthermore, the players need to be strong with stamina which will enhance their
effectiveness in the sporting activity. Therefore, performing isometric and ROM exercises is a
strategic approach of promoting the football sporting activity which is a popular Spanish cultural
operation.
LPN’s Role in Developing the Teaching Plan
LPN's play a vital role in enhancing faster recovery among patients who have undergone
joint pain or surgery. Therefore, they not only design the teaching plan among their colleges but
also engage in the ROM and Isometric exercises performance. They also provide the initial
teaching to the patients (PNO, 2019; Careerbuilder, 2016). Furthermore, they participate in
designing the healthy principles of performing Isometric and ROM exercises (NASN, 2017).
Home precautions in performing ROM and Isometric Exercises
While performing ROM exercises, there is a range of precautions that need to be
undertaken. Firstly, the trainer has to follow the care plan and stick on the goals for the resident.
Secondly, the trainer has to familiarize with the resident's diagnoses, limitations, and abilities
(HCPRO, 2019). The resident should also be dressed or covered with a bath blanket for modesty.

Lastly, the exercises should be performed in a private area that has enough space for moving the
extremities. Furthermore, one has to avoid internal rotations and abduction beyond the midline if

The patient shall be asked about some of the health complications experiences over past
years to tress their connectivity to the ROM and Isometric exercise gaps. Additionally, the
patient shall be asked to provide his/her general knowledge, theories and perception regarding
the topic of study in order to tress the learning needs.
Action
The execution of the teaching process shall be based on three aspects namely, attitude
promotion, knowledge enhancement and finally skills development. Following the fact that the
patient does not understand English, action plan shall employ the use of pictures to enhance the
understanding of the concept. Furthermore, practical works shall dominate the learning process.

As already mentioned, the implementation shall include all the types of ROM exercises (passive,

Determination of the learning outcomes shall be done not only on a short term basis but
also on a long term basis. For instance, achievement of short term goals such as pain relief shall

The teaching plan shall entail all the three domains of learning which will consequently
