Virginia Woolf is one of the most prolific author of the modernist ideas. In her works she
deeply defined the modernist sensibilities of the modern ideas in the society. The importance of
the women in the society is presented in the different ways in the works of Woolf where she
presents the idea of the freedom of the women in her work A Room of Ones Own. The work of
the author presents the idea of the freedom of women in the present society. To achieve a state of
freedom in the society the woman has to work on the different aspects of the development a
room of ones own is one such attempt to develop the overall ideology in the society. There are a
number of different ideals ranging from the development of the woman in the society ranging
from their social positioning to the different developmental ideas in the moder society. Here We
are Going to Conduct an interview with the author of the novel.

Virginia Woolf: Thank you for having me here.
Interviewer: As you know we are going to discuss the modern implication of the work A room of
Ones own and the relevance of the ideas in todays society.
Virginia Woolf: A Topic to Discuss indeed.
Interviewer: How is A Room Of Ones Own we read during the second half of the term relevant
in today's world?
Virginia Woolf: A room of one's own is still very relevant in the modern context as the plight of
women and different issues they face while writing and in developing intellectually remain the
same in most parts of the world. In the Western society the women maybe liberated from the

bindings that once existed but in most second world and third world countries that woman is not
free enough to develop for intellectual capabilities and walk towards their own social welfare. A
room of one's own is not about just a woman writing but about a woman developing a capability
of writing. Working towards the overall social welfare of women does have to take into the
consideration the issue of social welfare such that their education is not left behind. We can see
in the modern context to the condition of the majority of the women in the world have not
changed and thus the text remains constant reminder of the things that is needed for the
upliftment of women in the society. The room of one's own will remain relevant in the society as
long as there are no concrete ways for the emancipation of women and their development. The
ideology of the freedom of women should not exist of the intellectual and economic freedom
only but the freedom of expression and thought too. If you'd be considered extremely wrong if
the women are not able to speak on the same platform as the men in the patriarchal society. The
concept of the society is built by both men and women as the primary units of the society and
development should consider both the tenets.
Interviewer: What in the essay should readers know about?
Virginia Woolf: In The essay The Reader should understand that I'm not just saying about
writing fiction. Writing fiction is one of the aspects of Creative tendencies that a person can
have. As cited if Shakespeare had a sister and she had the same education as Shakespeare she
would have been an author or playwright of the same creative craft maybe. It is also evident from
the other sources like the sister of more that was a much better piano player than him but she had
to give in to our family life to Pisa family and this ended the career of one of the musical
geniuses in the world ever saw bloom. The creative tendencies are born of our own
understanding and comprehension of the world and therefore this must be developed before hand

so that a person can have a point of you and bifurcate between the true and the false or the fact
and the fiction. A woman in the society should have this minimal education and the freedom of
expression to write that is what a room of one’s own explains. It is just not that the human in the
society need to understand the importance of pursuing switch requirements for the overall
development but the society as a whole should understand that it is these things that is needed for
the development of women to create equal and Utopian society. In this context it is also
important to notice that the different developmental factors affecting the overall social
development of women are mainly in the hands of men and the women cannot criticize them due
to the lack of education and the art of oration and narration. The society in the long-term will
develop the idea of providing the women the liberty to develop their intellectual tendencies if the
women have the strength and perseverance to fight for her economic independence.
Interviewer: What in the text allows us to better understand our world and what light does our
world shed on that of the text?
Virginia Woolf: The text is the mirror to the society and the woman in society themselves. I do
not intend to hurt the sentiments of the people are created upheaval in their normal life. I have
reached the question of women not entering the world of writing fiction and taken up the cause
as one of the determining factor of the lack of women overall socio cultural development in the
society. The freedom of writing has to come at a cost be eat for any gender but it is easier
achieved for men in the today's society as these are the duties considered to be done by the man.
The the development of intellectual tendencies to write up work of fiction or 8 I develop any
kind of artistic tendencies has to come out from a mind which is free of all foundations and in
that case the need of education and overall economic freedom is a necessity. The economic
freedom as we know is mostly given to men in the modern society be it the women who is the

earning member as seen in most of the third world and second world countries. This is one of the
major issues that the women have not written up the ladder of artistic works. I am not saying that
there are no women today in the work of cultural art of writing fiction and other such things but
in comparison between to belong to a certain class of society and from certain pockets of the
world but the whole world has not developed such that the women can freely write and Express
themselves.
Interviewer: Do women still serve as a looking glass in the modern society and is the looking
glass concept still relevant in the present society as you say “Women have served all these
centuries as looking glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of reflecting the figure of
man at twice its natural size.”
Virginia Woolf: In this context I would like to bring to your attention that the woman has
always been seen as the secondary to the men in the society one of the major concerns in this
context is that the women in the society have been treated as an object to exert their supremacy
and present themselves as the important gender in the society. Even where the women were seen
as equals doing the same jobs, the men see themselves as the better performer as despite
everything the women have to be dependent on the men for the economic and the social security.
This very idea that the women in the society have to be dependent on the men and need the
validation from the opposite gender curbs their freedom and the expression of writing freely as
they have to write in accordance to the social norms.
Interviewer: How do elaborate your views about blurring the lines between the fact and fiction
when you say “Fiction must stick to facts, and the truer the facts the better the fiction — so we
are told.”

Virginia Woolf: The line between the fact and fiction is always blurred. The story and the
characters that are played maybe fictional but the situations they are in are relatable and real. The
fact and the fiction walk hand in hand in the different writing where a person may be presenting
the real life society or satirizing them using the tool of fictional writing. This blurred line has
always existed as the fictional work too draws their interpretation from a number of sources and
the real scenarios. In the earlier novels too the women maybe presented as strong but they had to
live by the social norms in the society.

Conclusion
Therefore in the essay we can see that the cultural tendencies and the intellectual abilities
are deeply dependent on the economic freedom of the women. Providing equal opportunities and
the freedom of working with a women will also help in their cultural and intellectual
development at will provide then the necessary economic freedom that is needed for free
expression. Room of one's own is one of the insights into the women's society and the problem
that the remains face in the modern world due to the rising patriarchy and the overall exercises
that they have to succeed in family life.
