1NURSING ASSIGNMENT
History of Roy’s theory of nursing
The Roy’s theory of nursing was developed in the year 1976 by Sister Callista Roy and
helps the nursing professionals by defining and explaining their theoretical frame of nursing. As
per Dobratz (2014), the Roy’s theory of nursing has mentioned that individuals and their
interrelated systems are divided in three aspects such as biological, psychological and social
aspects depending upon which, a balance between inner and outer world is determined. Hence,
the primary goal of this adaptation theory is developing or fostering the successful adaptation
between its internal and external environment (Ursavaş, Karayurt & İşeri, 2014). Further, it was
also mentioned that due to the presence of adaptation, it helps to develop optimal health and
wellbeing and hence, the concept of death, quality life and dignity are determined thorugh the
Roy’s adaptation theory of nursing (Alligood, 2017).
Purpose of Roy’s theory of nursing
As mentioned in the theory of adaptation, it refers to the process and outcomes in which
thinking and feeling of the people working individually or group is determined by assessing the
human behavior to environmental integration (Phillips & Harris, 2014). These adaptations
represents three levels of life processes such as compensation, integration and compromising of
life processes and hence, through these aspects, helps the nursing professionals to develop innate
coping mechanism and thorugh these acquired coping processes, they can develop automatic as
well as unconscious responses (Ursavaş, Karayurt & İşeri, 2014). Hence, the primary purpose of
the Roy’s adaptive model is developing social integrity and flexibility among the healthcare
professionals and develops interdependent relation among each other (Alligood, 2017).

2NURSING ASSIGNMENT
Use of this theory as foundation of practice
The usage of nursing theories and concepts that are developed by the philosophers and
nursing professionals working in the process, their emphasis on the care process could not be
eliminated. As Alligood (2017) mentioned that with increase in the study and educational aspects
related nursing, its practice, its philosophies and its connection with patients and human
emotions, it helps to develop theories and concepts so that people and their concepts related to
nursing practice could be used to develop frameworks and ethics of the modern nursing process.
Shah, Abdullah and Khan (2015) mentioned in their research that due to the presence of
generalized and logical nature of the process, and scope of hypothesis development, these
aspects are useful in modern nursing processes and hence, it should be mentioned that these
theories are useful in the care processes.
Application of this theory in other organizations hospitals or schools
The assumptions of the Roy’s adaptive theory are general and logical for the application
in the other aspects of workplace such as schools, hospitals and other workplaces. Few of these
are:
1. God could be described through diversity and variation of his creation and these are
achieved thorugh awareness, faith, enlightenment as well as human abilities.
2. It is important for every individual to have a relationship with world and each aspect
developed by the God (Alligood, 2017).
Hence, from these assumptions, it could be understood that with application of Roy’s
adaptation theory schools, colleges, and hospitals every organization could develop ethical and
effective working environment (Ursavaş, Karayurt & İşeri, 2014).
