Introduction
Operation management within the organisation is the area related to the management, and it is
concerned for controlling and designing the production process and also to redesign business
operations in the product and services production. In the current report, the management
operations within the context of the NHS (National Health Services) will discuss by considering
the leadership skill in Ruth May. Ruth May is working as the chief nursing officer and national
director at the NHS England and working for improving the services of NHS. The report will
include the introduction about the Ruth May as the leader of NHS and how she will work to
implement the changes in improvement in NHS. Some of the leadership skill using by the Ruth
May will also be discussed in this report.

1.0 The Candidate as a leader
Ruth May is currently working as the NHS chief nursing officer in the NHS (National Health
Services), England. Ruth May is also working as the national director, and she is responsible for
infection control and prevention. Her responsibility is to identify the current issue facing by the
service users of the NHS in respect of the infectious diseases along with the treatment for
preventing and controlling those diseases for their patients. She was appointed for roles of
Executive Director of Nursing at the NHS improvement in the 2016 April and Director of
Nursing at the Monitor for healthcare sector regulator (Leaders of NHS, 2019). She contributes
her efforts and commitment to analysing the treatment for preventing infectious diseases within
the community. She has outstanding and effective leadership skills which help the service users
and a team of NHS to implement some of the changes and improvement in the services of NHS.

1.1 Introduction
Definition of leadership
Leadership is considered as the action using by the leaders of the organisation to lead the
individual or group of an individual within the organisation. Leadership is the capability carried

by the leaders so that they can achieve the set goals and objectives of the organisation along with
their team members (Grint et al, 2016). Following are some sections which will discuss different
types of leadership and approaches that are using by the Ruth May while working as the
Executive Director within NHS.
1.2 Transformation Leadership
Transformational leadership is considered the leadership theory under which leaders of the
organisations works along with their team for identifying the requirement of change in the
organisation as per their vision and mission. Ruth May as the NHS chief nursing officer use this
leadership theory and analyse the need to change in their treatment in respect of the patients who
are suffering from the infectious diseases (Hoch et al, 2018). Ruth May about more passionate
about the nurturing the NHS next-generation nursing staff so that proper treatment can be
provided to their service users. She analysed the need to change in NHS in respect of the
professional development and for this, she is working across NHS for encouraging professional
development.
1.3 Transactional Leadership
This leadership theory used by the leaders when they want to promote some compliance by the
followers both punishments and rewards methods for improvement. Ruth May main purpose is to
improve the skills of the nursing staff as she believes that nursing staff members are the main
workers of NHS because they are directing connected with the patients or service users. Ruth
May use this leadership style when she wants to transform the skills of the nursing staff from the
team member to an individual personality (Dartey-Baah, 2015). For achieving this target she
always ready to organise the training programs in which she gave leadership speeches for
encouraging the nursing staff of NHS. She mainly focuses on motivating the employees of NHS
for achieving the short term target of an organisation in a specific duration.
1.4 Action-based Leadership
This leadership theory using by the leaders of the organisations which focus on the need of the
leaders so that they can work more efficiently. The action-based theory of leadership revolves
the activities that are undertaken by the leaders. Ruth May is very famous for her outstanding
leadership traits and characteristics as she always motivates her team to improve skills and give
the quality of output for further improvement (Frich et al, 2015). She took various types of

actions for improving her skills and nursing team of NHS which include the advocating for the
improvement of mental health awareness at the workplace and also conducts championing
volunteer activities for supporting frontline workforce. She also uses her leadership skill by
being a vocal supporter of WRES agenda. The action taken by her has increased diversity
management at the NHS.
1.5 Situational Leadership
The situational leadership theory guides the leaders of the organisation to analyse the effective
ideas for solving the problems at the workplace according to the particular situations. Ruth May
as the Executive Director of Nursing analysed various types of internal problems happening at
the workplace of NHS due to which their health and social care services are getting affected. She
uses a situational leadership style to analyse the new strategies and creative ideas so that she can
handle the critical situations of NHS (Thompson and Glasø, 2015). According to her
identification, the critical situation facing by NHS is related to the lack of nursing staff attention
towards service users due to which they are failed to control the infection problems. To tackle
this situation she personal works for the nursing staff and help them out to improve their nursing
services.

2.0 Arguments on system leadership and chaos theory of leadership
The chaos theory of the leadership showcase the story of the hypothesis itself and this theory also
define the acknowledgement framework which is based on the reorganizing scheme and vibrant
concept. As per this theory, it is essential to have synergies among various continuous-change
and notions of chaos under leadership. As per Baltaci and Balcı (2017), the systems leadership
theory cover three scheme levels such as- system, then sub-system and then supra-system and
these systems are measured adaptive and because of this some of the organizational theorists also
refers systems as the loose coupling. Some of the limitations also analysed in the systems theory
and that are based on the operations management but to resolve the limitations it is essential for
the leaders to improve continuous communication at the internal level with few exterior
information. As per Gill et al, (2018), system leadership is mainly based on the effective
communicative so that internal conflicts can be removed and an effective system can be managed
at the workplace. chaos theory and system theory have split base related to the open system so it
proofs that chaos theory is effective than system theory.
3.0 Compare and contrast of His/her role as a leader and manager
Ruth May is currently working as the chief nursing officer in the NHS, England. There are few
boundaries of leaders and managers within NHS which are blurred. The leaders of the
organisation cannot perform their functions without the managers and same as with the
managers. For instance, clinical leaders need clinical skills, traits and characteristics in respect of
the management concept and managers working in NHS need administration skill so that they
can also handle the technical things through their managerial skills (Reina et al, 2018). The skill
of leadership is not only considered as the one-dimensional because every individual working for
NHS requires quality of leadership skills. Ruth May have skills of leaders while handling and
guiding nursing next generations for NHS and also have managerial skill while monitoring the
performance of the nursing staff.

Conclusion
The report has concluded that skills and traits carried by the leader of NHS such as- Ruth May
have helped the organisation to manage the operations of NHS. She was working as a chief
nursing officer for NHS and this she used leadership styles to improve the performance of the
nursing staff members which helped NHS to improve their operation management. The report
has also compared the chaos and system theory of leadership and it is concluded that chaos
theory is more effective as compared to system theory. In the end, the report has also concluded
that the leader of the organisation needs to have leadership and managerial skills both for
handling operations.
