INTRODUCTION
Leadership is the actions and leading the groups of people in the environment of the business
with the values and code of conduct in so many effective way. Every unit of business needs a
successful leader for competing with various enterprises in the global market. Management
practices term defers to the working method and innovations which is used by manger of the
company for improving the effectiveness of the employees work as well over the work system. It
used to support the culture and structure of the company and also it influences them by using
different practices of management practices. Sainsbury is one of the largest chain of the
supermarkets in UK. This report will study on the brief history of the company and leadership
styles and management practices of the organisation. It also highlighted the achieved and
implemented examples of the organisation and all the recommendation which has been
improved(Holten and Brenner, 2015.).
MAIN BODY
1) brief history and summary of the business.
Sainsbury is one of the largest chain of supermarkets which present in cities, towns and
retail parks across the UK. It has been founded in 1869 by John James, the company has 16.9%
share of the supermarkets and it has early adopter for self- servicing of the retailing in UK.
Headquarter of this company is Holborn, London, United Kingdom and locations of the
company is in 1,415 shops in market. The expansion of the company is 125 years which has been
cautions but also inexorable which accelerate the decades of the company. There are so many
competitors which diversified the business area for countering the slow growth expected in the
food retail industry.
It has the largest supply of food chain but accordingly it has surveys of nationwide which
analyse the competitors of the company. It has earned top rating for the quality of the products
and services, profitable pricing, successful development, advertising and marketing of the
company is also included. The main aim of the organisation is to serve the best quality and also
clean and hygiene products to its customers. Sainsbury would become famous for their quality of
products and fair prices. The use of advanced design and materials had an elegance which attract
the customers and also retain the customers(Iqbal, Anwar and Haider, 2015.).

The main reason behind choosing this organisation is it is larger business retailer in UK,
Sainsbury is customer oriented and the main objectives is to providing the offers of products
which is value for money to its customers and it also delivers high quality services. It also builds
loyalty of customers through using the effective strategy of cost is growing the business activities
in the global market. It has more than 30% market share of the UK supermarket. Sainsbury has
186,900 employees across the world which provides the product's and services to its customers
in the global market. It requires the leadership and management skill for the development of the
business, supply chain management, personnel management and store operations which results in
growth of business and the high productivity of Sainsbury. The main objective of the company
is to develop the leadership qualities of its employees throughout the organisation which
involves the administrators to customer assistant and the broad of directors.
Vision of Sainsbury
Vision of the company is to be most trusted retailer in the market and also make the environment
where people love to work and shopping. Its main aim and vision is giving the satisfaction to the
customers and putting customers at heart of everything company do and also it offers so many
channels for offering the best shopping experience to the customers and also it invests on
stores(Popli and Rizvi, 2016.).
2)Leadership styles and management practices
The manger of the Sainsbury the autocratic, democratic and Laissez-faire styles which
applied in different layers around the structure and operations of the company;
Autocratic leadership style:- The Autocratic leadership styles based on the controlling
power. This leadership style of mangers is it gives orders to its subordinates and employees for
expecting the higher productivity from them. It is one of the strong dimensional of leadership
style where mangers, leaders has full power and authority to take the decision regarding to the
organisation. Mangers of the Sainsbury using the autocratic style of leadership in so many
critical situations and problems of the organisation because it helps in making and taking the
quick decision in critical problems and in critical time on the basis of observations,
understanding the problems and experience for solving the problems. From using this leadership
style it increases the productivity at large extent and on other hand leaders of the Sainsbury do
not demand the engagement of the employees for making the quick and critical decision(Bhatti
and et.al., 2012.).

Democratic leadership style:- it is generally known as the participative styles of the
leadership. Democratic leadership style is mainly defined as the collaborative styles which takes
the employees for giving the suggestion in decision making process of the organisation. In this
the team members are highly skilled and experienced for taking part in it. Sainsbury support the
democratic leadership styles for making the decision which is related to the organisation
structures, operations and various approaches for achieving the goals. Sainsbury adopted this
leadership styles in order to making the decision at each end for the implementation of the
employees. From this leadership style it improves the communication between top level to
middle level management of the firm and it requires the manger to be more intelligent,
considerate, creative and competent for choosing the right statement of employees.
Laissez-faire leadership style:- in this manger gives the delegate responsibility to the
members of the team and for working with their own minimum and no interference from top
level. Sainsbury using this leadership style for the development of the broader of the plans of the
organisation like the needs of the training and fixing the budgets by the departmental mangers.
This leadership style creates innovative environment in Sainsbury for improving the
productivity. From this leadership style team member's get motivated by it and also encourage
each other for working.
Management practices of the organisation
Sainsbury is customer oriented firm which mainly focused on the practices of the
management like personalised for the long-term relationship with its customers. This practise
mainly focused on providing the best quality of the goods and services for their customers, it
adopted a policy for the continues improvement in customers related services and also develop
the skills of the employees for meeting the needs of customers and it introduces the efficiency of
the monitoring system.
Sainsbury uses the training and development practices of the management for improving the
overall performance of the business enterprises. Sainsbury identify the various types of training
needs for their employees and then provide the training accordingly for improving the
effectiveness of the employees work at workplace. It is a way to getting the best results from
employees in fewer efforts and it improves the productivity of the employees in Sainsbury. There
are some steps which shows the management practices for inspiring employees for producing the

focused about their advancing their own interests. The main and first thing of the manager is to
identify the needs from that employees care about the vision of the Sainsbury. Engaging workers
is one of the way for taking the responsibility for performing well and also attract the new and
fresh talent to the company. From the engagement of the employees its results in right conditions
for all the employees and members of the organisation(Donate and de Pablo, 2015).
Reward effort:- it is one of the management practices where employees get motivated
by the rewards of the Sainsbury. Recognition for the efforts and achievement of the employees
such as thank you for well done job which feels valued to the employees. From reward efforts it
makes positive impact on the employees for their work because it gives appreciation and reward
in so many ways to motivate and encourage employees. It consisting about the controlling and
analysing the employees for compensation, remuneration and all the other benefits which given
by Sainsbury. It creates efficiency and improve the performance management of the employees.

productivity and profitability of the firm. It has disadvantages in the terms of pushing the
pressure on the employees to perform work faster for the exploitation of the results of the
employees and employees joined the trade unions for creating the conflicts between management
and employees And for improving the performance it needs to apply the system theory for
building the better and good relationship between management and employees and creates the
good working environment at work place of the Sainsbury and it encourages the employees to
work effectively and efficiently towards the achievement of the business objectives of the
enterprises(Khan and et.al.,2015).

The above study will examine the organisational leadership plays an important role in achieving
the success of the firm in the global market. Organisation with the democratic style of leadership
improves the effectiveness work of the employees and it also allows the participation of the
