Management & operations are the business practices where organization apply the
various functions to enhance their efficiency as well as effectiveness. It will also helps in
building strategy for the effective decision which further increase the productivity as well as
profitability (Laszlo and Zhexembayeva, 201). It include the process where inputs converted into
outputs for the end users that is consumers. For the better understanding of this concept, this
report choose the Sainsbury's company. It is the third largest supermarket chain in the UK.
This report include the different topics such as role of leader and functions of manager
and how they perform in different situations. Along with this, apply different theory and
approaches in the organization. Along with this, Key approaches of operations management
which help the business to achieve goals & objectives. In addition, it include the importance or
value of operation management and then analyses business environment and factors which affect
operational management or their decision making process of the company.

P1. Different role and characteristic of a leader and manager of the organization
Overview of the Organization: Sainsbury's is the UK's supermarket store which is third
largest chain of supermarket sector (Sainsbury's, 2019). Company founded in 1869 and it is
developed by the John James Sainsbury. It's headquarter in Drury Lane, London and company
have about 16.9% market share where Tesco and Asda is the biggest competitor of Sainsbury's.
Role of leaders: Leader is the person who play different role in the organization and
achieve business goals & objectives. Leader help the employees to complete their task in order to
achieve their goals.
Leader of the company develop various plans and policies which help the business to
execute in effective way.
Organize the internal structure of the business to perform well and able to achieve their
goals & objectives.
Leader provide various training and development programs to enhance their performance
to increase their efficiency as well as effectiveness.

Characteristics of leader: It will include the various trait which is required to become a
successful leader and it will be discussed below:
leader have to be confident because employees of the company follow their instruction
or if it not them workers also not able to complete their task.
Leader should be honest and integrated because people will follow them and they are the
accountable for every activity(Basham, 2012).
Leader should have charismatic personality so their follower will listen their commands
and have to committed regarding their work which motivate others.
Role of manager: Manager is the person who manager all the operational activities and
take essential decision in respect of the organization. Which further increase the productivity or
profitability of the company.
Manager build various strategy in respect of the organization and then implement for the
effective performance.
Manager take effective decision in order to achieve their business goals & objectives and
long with this, manager provide the relevant information in the organization which help
the employees to perform their duty in well manner.
Characteristics of manager: It will include the features which is required in the
manager to complete their task in well manner. Effective manager have capability to take
appropriate decision in respect of the business and it will be discussed below:
Manager required critical thinking process which helps in building effective strategy
which help the business to achieve their goals & objectives.
Manager have to accountable regarding their each operational function and need to build
effective team for the completion task with full of efficiency (Jarad, 2012). So managers
required team building quality and have good leader characteristics.

increase the profitability or productivity which further helps in achieving their business goals &
objectives. In the Sainsbury's organization, manager of the company manage all the activities
related to the operations where.
Manager of the company control various activities on regular basis which increase the
efficiency and leader help the business in order to provide various training and development
which is required to fulfil the need of the organization to complete their operational functions. In
the Sainsbury's, there are various situation occurs when manager or leader effectively perform
their role in order to increase efficiency or effectiveness which further helps in achieving their
business goals & objectives (Ghobakhlo and Hong Tang, 2013).
For example: Sainsbury's face the issues regarding lower customer base in comparison
to their competitors. Tesco is the biggest competitors of the Sainsbury's company so manager
have to build various effective strategy in order to make their stronger customer base. Manager
of the company analyse the market trends and current demand of the customer which help the
company to attract more consumers. Sainsbury's use latest technology in their operational
functions to develop new product as per consumer demand and leader of the company provide
necessary training which help the workers to complete their task.
For example: in the workplace employees are not satisfy with their work, so manager
and leader of the company analyse their situation and take necessary actions to satisfy their
employees. Manager focus on employee engagement where they develop a communication

among the worker so they can share their problems with manager or leader. It help the manager
to resolve their issues and try to satisfy them because if employees are bot happy with their work
then they are not capable to achieving their business goals. So manager need to resolve the issues
and try to satisfy them in order to increase their productivity or profitability of the company.
Another example is that company face the issues regarding low product quality which
reduce the profitability, market share and their customers also (Meng and Boyd, 2017). So
manager of the Sainsbury's use latest technology to improve their quality of products and provide
necessary training regarding new technology which help the employees to increase their
efficiency or effectiveness.
P3. Evaluate the different theories or models and than apply in the organization
Leadership and management help the organization to increase their efficiency in order to
achieve their goals & objectives. Their are various theories and models which help the business
to increase their productivity as well as profitability. Sainsbury's can adopts these theories and it
will be discussed below:
Contingency theory: According to this theory, there is no specific leadership style to
deal with the situation. Here, manager of the company have to analyze their own that which
leadership style is suitable as per the situation. Manager have to take necessary actions to solve
internal issues. In the organization, various internal as well as external issues occurs which affect
the business in terms of profitability or productivity. Manager of Sainsbury's can adopt this
theory in their organization where manager take action according to the situation. It is retail
sector company where market risk related to the competitors will increase so they have to build
strategy to attract more consumers to achieve their organizational goals & objectives.
System theory: This theory is used for the completion of any group task where group of
people work towards common goals and then achieve the result. This theory used by the top
management to increase their their productivity and profitability. Manager of Sainsbury's can
adopt this theory to increase their productivity which automatically increase the profit margin of
the company. In this theory, leaders set the targets to their employees which increase their
potential or performance in the business.
Situational theory: In this theory, manager of the company handle the problems
according to the situation (Coombs, 2013). This types of leadership does not have any specific
way to resolve the issues. For example: company have to produce huge quantity to fulfill the

people to complete their market demand. Manager have to take this decision to achieve their
goals and objectives in order to increase their productivity which automatically increase the
profit margin of the company.

effectiveness in the operational functions. Manager or leader both can perform their duty

organization
Operational management is the business practice which help the organization to ensure
that, deliver of product will be done on time and raw goods converted into finished product. It
will help to increase the efficiency or effectiveness of the operational functions. Their are various
key approaches which can be adopted by the Sainsbury's company and it will be discussed
below:
Total quality management (TQM): It is a management system which majorly focus on
product quality as well as customer. It include the continuous improvement of employees in
order to achieve high productivity or profitability of the company. This approach include the
strategy, information, and effective communication in order to provide quality product. In the
Sainsbury's, manager of the company majorly focus on consumers and then build effective
strategy to satisfy them. By using total quality of management approach, company improve their
quality which increase their demand of customers and further it will increase the productivity or
profitability.
Lean manufacturing: It is a systematic method which help the organization to reduce
their wastage in the operations. Wastage can be occur due to overburden and waste create
because of uneven work. In the Sainsbury's, manger have to ensure that company reduce the
wastage and for this they have to management their inventory level. Also provide the required

affect the operational business. Organization analyse the factors which affect the business and it
can be done through PESTEL analysis.
PESTEL analysis: It is a marketing tool which monitor the macro environment which
impact the organization. It include the various factors such as political, social, technical, legal
etc. These points will be discussed below:
Political Factor: Government stability in the UK nation will positively affect the
Sainsbury's company. Because demand of their products is very high which help the organization
to increase their productivity or profitability. Due to effective customer base, company survive in
the market for the longer for the longer period (Dimic, Orlov and Piljak, 2015).
Economic Factor: This factor affect the organization and it's profit margin along with
this economic factor provide the global growth. In the Sainsbury's, food price inflation negatively
affect the company which reduce their profit margin as well as long year of depression also
affect the operational function of the company. Due to food price recession, price of the goods
will reduce which is beneficial for the consumers but it negatively affect the Sainsbury's
company.
Social Factor: Social factor help the organization to identify the behavior or attitude of

organization capable to increase their market share and increase their ability to grow globally.
For this, manager have to done timely research to analyze the market and it's current trends.
Environmental Factor: This factor include the change in weather, geographical location
etc. External factors generate pressure from society and organization try to reduce it's effect on
their productivity. In the Sainsbury's, company take initiative to reduce these affect so company
change their packaging methods and eliminate the use of plastic. Along with this, start recycling
their waste which is positively affect the company.
Legal Factor: This factor include the various rules and legislation which every
organization have to follow. It positively affect the Sainsbury's company because they follow all
the necessary legislation. UK's government introduce the sugar tax for the purpose of reducing
use of sugar in the drinks approx 20% by 2020. Company also have to ensure that, any
advertisement regarding high – fat, sugar or salt (HFSS) is ban in the UK under the age of 16.
Manager of the Sainsbury's, need to ensure that their internal function follow all the legislation.
So company build their further strategy according to it and then essential decision for the
organization to increase their productivity or profitability.
