Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
This chapter presents an overview of the important facets of the study like its aim,
objectives, questions, its rationale and other important aspects which are going to guide the entire
study. More importantly, an introduction to the business activities of the corporation, Sakan, on
which the study would be conducted, had also been offered.
1.2 Background of the Study
According to Arabtimesonline.com (2020), presently there are more than 30,000 small-
scale enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurial business ventures operational within Kuwait which
accounts for 90% of the registered business ventures of the concerned nation. However, as per
the official report of Worldbank.org (2020), the important issue arises since they comprise only
3% of the total GDP of Kuwait while offering employment to roughly around 23% of the
workforce of the concerned nation. Magalhaes and Abouzeid (2018) are of the viewpoint that
this aspect of the business landscape of Kuwait had adversely affected the growth rate of the
concerned nation and despite the different initiatives undertaken by the national government of
Kuwait like the “National Fund for SME Development” (2013) and others, the situation
continues to worsen.
More importantly, the entrepreneurial, marketing and strategic issues which the different
SMEs and the entrepreneurial ventures are presently facing within the spectrum of the business
landscape of the concerned nation had adversely affected their growth rate and thereby given rise
to the issue under discussion here (Simintiras and Al-Hajji 2018). In this relation, it needs to be
said that some of the most important issues that the SMEs and the entrepreneurial ventures face

within the nation of Kuwait are related to the lack of availability of raw materials, labor crisis,
difficulty in getting skilled foreign labors, high interest rates for business loans, high operations
and labor cost, issues related to external marketing and others (Al Hussaini 2019). Thus, for
facilitating the growth of the business landscape of Kuwait, its national government needs to
resolve these issues.
1.3 Overview of the Business Activities of Sakan
Sakan Real Estate established in the year 2016 offers distinguished as well as integrated
real estate services to the different people of the nation of Kuwait without having the face the
issues that they would normally have to face while seeking the help of the real estate brokers or
the contractors (Sakan.co 2020). An important feature of this corporation is the fact that it helps
the individuals to search for property, be it for rent or for purchase, get all the information
related to the property, including information regarding the neighborhood of the property and
others from anywhere they want and that too as per their own time and convenience (Sakan.co
2020). More importantly, the property buyers or the property renters have the opportunity to
view the photographs of the property, directly get in touch with the property owners without
having to deal with the brokers or the middlemen through the usage of the online platform of the
corporation (Sakan.co 2020). This in turn not only saves the time of the individuals but also
helps them to search for property without having to go through the trouble or the hassles that
they used to face in the earlier times. Furthermore, the online app or the platform of the
corporation is very simple and user-friendly as well and stringent quality parameters are being
followed by the corporation which ensures the fact that the buyers or the renters are being able to
get authentic as well as best quality deals. The extensive of the corporation on the aspect of
quality as well as customer satisfaction had significantly helped the concerned corporation to

Ghura, Li and Harraf (2017) are of the viewpoint that the success or the effectiveness of
the different entrepreneurial business ventures greatly depends on the extent to which the
entrepreneurs are being able to resolve or address the entrepreneurial, marketing and strategic
issues faced by their business ventures. Adding to this, Solomon, Alabduljader and Ramani
(2019) have noted that for resolving these issues the entrepreneurs are required to identify the
root causes from which these issues stem from and thereby formulate adequate measures for the
resolution of the same. However, it is seen that although over the years numerous scholars have
conducted researches on the concepts of entrepreneurship and new business venture development
yet very few scholars or researchers have devoted much attention to the entrepreneurial,
marketing and strategic issues faced by the entrepreneurial business ventures. It is precisely here
