Same-Sex Marriage is one of the most controversial issues in the world in the present
times. Same-Sex Marriage is usually referred to the situation in which two individuals
belonging to the same sex and the same gender decides to marry each other. This is usually
associated with the cases of homosexuality in which an individual has the sexual preference
belonging to the other person form the same gender. This is a controversial topic in itself
because of the fact that same-sex marriages are generally not well-viewed by the members of
the society itself. It is because of this reason that the concept of same-sex marriage is
considered to be illegal and banned in many countries of the world itself.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss about the contemporary debates all over
the world about the concept of the same sex marriages in the present times.
Before understanding the concept of the same sex marriage using the sociological
theories, it is important for the readers to understand the reasons why the concept of same-sex
marriages are illegal and banned in a large number of societies in the world itself. This is
because of the society generally do not caste a good glance on two individuals belonging to
the same gender deciding to marry each other and spending their lives with each other. The
debate for and against the concept of the same sex marriage itself (Cornell, 2013). This is
because of the fact that they consider the marriage to be a holy religious ritual itself in which
a male and a female decide to marry and spend their lives with each other. In this case, if they
find a marriage taking place between two males or two females marrying each other, they
would consider it to be against the wishes of God himself. Hence, the people tend to go
against the concept of the same sex marriage (Lindsey, 2014). This point of view of the poem
also gets solidified by the teachings of God in the Bible itself. This is because the concept of
the unity of a male and a female is considered to be the symbol of God himself. In that place
the marriage of two males or that of two females is said to be of the work of Satan himself.

The concept of the same sex marriage can be best explained through the concept of
the functionalist theory of the humans themselves (Morgan et all, 2014). This is because of
the fact that the functionalist theory can analyse the debates that the people over the concepts
of the same sex marriage itself. The functionalist theory or as it is called functionalism itself,
refers to the view of the society as a place where the members of the society are known to
form types of various types of relationships between themselves (Lindsey, 2015). It is using
these relationships between the people themselves that the members of the society builds up
their families. Functionalist view of the same-sex marriages as a temporary sort of societal
disturbance itself. Thus is because of the fact that the functionalist theory wants to challenge
the concepts of the same sex marriage through the legal institution itself (Cornell, 2013). It is
because of this reason that the functionalist theory is considered to be one of the best method
of explaining the concept of the same sex marriage itself. In this case, a traditional family is
seen as a one in which there will be a male as well as a female. Instead, if the family consists
of two males or two females, then it is considered to be the disturbances in the society itself.
In other words, it can be said that the concept of the sans sex marriages receives some
type of support from that of the same sex marriages itself because of the fact that the
functionalist theory of the society treats the concept of the same sex marriage as an integral
part of the society itself (Lindsey, 2014). In addition to this, it considers the same sex
marriage to be an important party of the society itself. This is because of the fact that the
functionalist theory considers it to be fulfilling some important function in the society itself.
Thus, all these points out the evidence that the functionalist theory of the society can be
considered to be an important part for debating about the importance and the controversies
which the concept of the same sex marriage in the rems of the society itself (Kong, 2016).
Functionalist theory of the society can be used to study how the concept of the same sex
marriage can be made much more popular in the society and such marriages needs to be

accepted by the members of the society itself. It is because that the experts are of the opinion
that the functionalist theory of the society can be used for the purpose of the debating about
the concept of the same sex marriage itself.
Thus, the discussions based on the subject matter of the same sex marriage are used to
prove to the readers about the fact that the same sex marriage should be considered to be
accepted in the same fashion as the normal marriage ceremonies itself. This will help the
re4aders to be more aware about the subject of the marriage itself (Connell, 2013).
Thus, from the above discussion, it can be stated that the same sex marriage needs to
be given more recognition itself. If the same sex marriages are made popular in the society
itself, then it can lead to the people of the society accepting the marriage ceremonies itself.
This will also be beneficial for the individuals getting married because of the fact this will
lead them to getting more recognition in the society itself rather than being ostracized by the
members of the society itself. It is because of this reason that it is said that functionalist is the
best theory to explain the concept of the same sex marriage in the world itself.
