The concept of sustainability
Sustainability is a concept that is coined by the Brundtland Commission of the United
Nations in 1987. It is defined as the process by which development is focused not only on the
financial and economic boundaries but is also concentrated towards the improvement of the
environment and the society. Sustainable development is the recognition of the duties one has
towards the society and the environment (Benn et al. 2014). The resource that one gets in
order to develop the future depends upon the environment or the society and hence it is the
responsibility of all to keep a check on the well being of the source of the resources. Some of
the principles of sustainability are as follows:
The Material Domain: comprises of the foundation for regulating the flow of materials and
energy.
The Economic Domain: management and increment of the wealth.
The Domain of Life: offers ways and rules for appropriate behavior in the environment.
The Social Domain: social interactions ways and means in order to maintain a balance in the
society.
The Spiritual Domain: depends on the global code of ethics (Benn et al. 2014).
The idea of the management of the King’s Cross Saturday Farmers Market is in sync
with the principle of sustainability as the program that they run is based on organic food
which is a sustainable and healthy alternative to heavy chemicals pesticides. The farming
products that is grown without the use of any kind of chemical pesticides or fertilizers or any
other synthetic external inputs is known as organic food. It is advised by many nutritionists

around the world that organic food items are a healthy alternative. This is in sync with almost
all the five principles that have been discussed above (Benn et al. 2014).
Triple bottom line
The triple bottom line concept was developed by John Elkington in the year 1994, the
variables of this model is a contrast to the variables of the traditional form of business model
that was dependent on financial and economic development of the business. The objectives
and the goals of all business bodies were surrounded with the financial growth and
development bottom which was opposed by Elkington, he said that the corporate bodies
should identify their responsibility towards other important aspects as well and hence People,
Planet and Price should be given equal importance. It can be said that this concept is an
extension of the concept of sustainability (Glac 2015). Many organisations new or old have
imbibed this business model recognising the duties they have towards the environment or the
society. In the recent years profit making or non-profit making organizations have used this
framework to assess their sustainable development. Even many government organisations
around the world have incorporated this idea to ensure that the development has parity with
the environment and the society as well (Andersson and Lundberg 2013).
The event also follows the triple bottom line concept as all the stakeholders that are
associated with the event is not only contributing towards the financials and economic aspect
of the event it is also in turn developing a healthy lifestyle and contributing to something that
is eco-friendly as well as helping the society to lead a healthy life owing to the organic nature
of the products sold (Kingscrossmarket.org 2018).

2018).
Another important stakeholders are the customers and the people who come to visit
the market and who buy form the stalls. Organic food Markets organise this event every

Negative impact of the event
King’s Cross Saturday Farmers market offer fresh farm produce and fresh organic
food items for the public who come to visit the market. The event has an optimistic approach
and the management makes sure that they demarcate the authentic organic food from the ones
that are not fully organic in nature. Though there are certain negative impacts of the event
observed as well.
Since this is an open air market place and the food are prepaid in open there is a
possibility of contamination leading to sickness and diseases (Andersson and Lundberg
2013).
It has been argued by many that organic farming may not be the most environment
friendly method of farming, some of the pesticides and fertilizers that are used by the organic
farmers have to be used over and over again in order to maintain their impact, regular use of
pesticides like copper-based options prove to be harmful to other flora and fauna in the
environment.
