AI Summary
This report documents an internship at Saudi Aramco's RasTanoura Maintenance Shop, focusing on rotating equipment and machining. The intern was involved in dismantling, cleaning, inspecting, and assembling rotating equipment such as centrifugal pumps, vertical pumps, turbines, mixers, and gearboxes. A significant portion of the work involved a high-speed pump with a gearbox, requiring specialized skills. The report details the disassembly process, including the removal of the coupler, staff box, impeller, and bearings, followed by cleaning and inspection. The intern also gained experience in lathe machine operation, including facing and boring. The report includes observations on challenges faced, plans for future learning, and appendices with relevant figures illustrating the equipment.

Summary
First, I am an employee at Saudi Aramco. My internship will be
undertaken in RasTanoura Maintenance Shop. On the fifth and sixth
week, my schedule will have assigned duties on Rotating equipment
and machining area.
Background
The main activities which I am assigned on this section include
dismantling, cleaning, inspecting and assembling of the rotating
equipment which include centrifugal Pumps, vertical pumps,
Turbines, Mixers and gearboxes. On this section, I worked on high
speed pump. This pump contains a gearbox in is able to increase the
speed of the motor from 1750 to 12000 RPM. The pump is special
since it required special experienced worker to operate on it. First, I
dismantled the pump. This started by coupling and ending with the
impeller. The thin coupler was first removed by loosening the bolts
on the lower cover. Then the staff box is removed from the body.
Next, the impeller is removed from the shaft and then the bearings
from bearing housing. Lastly, the removal of the bearings from the
hydraulic press. After the removal of the parts, the parts are send
which are not critical to sandblasting area for cleaning from paint
and dirt. Some of the key parts which are send include the impeller,

body and bearing housing. Inspection of the bearing and shaft from
damages is the next step which is able to take place. Here we are
able to check clearance between the bearings to shaft as well as
bearing to the bearing housing. In addition, since some impellers are
threaded and some are bore, it is important to check the bore with
shaft and ensure they are safe clearance. Also, I was able to learn
performing the face and bore for the other side of the machine. In
addition, I learnt that operating the lathe machine is easy but
requires careful and safety items in case of flying objects.
Progress
The main activities which are scheduled for my internship on the
third and fourth week include working on rotation equipment. This
involved learning how to dismantle, inspect and assemble the
pumps. At this section, I did not face much challenges in the
dismantling and assembling of the pump parts since I have been
working with pumps since I was 5 years.
Plans
I plan to gain more knowledge on the rotating equipment field and
also study different cases of failure of the pumps and turbines.
