The school health services support the education department and health care system by
offering services like referrals and screenings, treatment and medication facilities for the children
in school (Council of School Health, 2016). These services are delivered in form of first aid,
helping the students in availing self management services, and extending the health counseling
support for students, parents and teaching staff (State of New Jersey [SNJ], 2018).
Do the schools in your area have a school health nurse assigned?
Every school in New Jersey is assigned with a physician, and a registered nurse (RN),
who work in collaboration with children, and their parents (Council of School Health, 2016). The
Nurse conducts regular checkups of students’ general health signs like BP, Asthma, Pulse rate,
referring them to specialized physicians if necessary (Becker & Maughan, 2017). RN performs
immunization, diagnosis of treatable diseases, malnutrition etc. The RN acts as a mediator for the
students who visits the school and interacts with them helping them in making informed
decisions about their health and other well being issues.
What are ways in your area schools in which health promotion and management of existing
health problems are addressed?
The school health is promoted and managed in form of components like nutrition
services, physical health, counseling, safe and healthy environment at school, and health services
for the school staff. The school health services include medical examinations and evaluations,
screenings of Auditory, BP, Oral health and dental health, weight and height, scoliosis, vision,

and other mandated screenings(State of New Jersey [SNJ], 2018). These interventions address
the control, prevention and management of communicable schools in schools, providing support
for chronic health conditions, handling the crisis and emergencies and also supporting the
students with special needs (New Jersey State School Nurse Association [NJSSNA], 2018). The
School health Services ensure availability of safe drinking water, minimum noise, protection
from extreme temperatures, integrated pest management, good quality indoor air, and care from
pathogens (New Jersey State School Nurse Association[NJSSNA], 2018).
The schools in New Jersey have written procedures and polices directed by local school boards.
There are standardized laws for immunization, reportable illness and administration of
medication etc. (State of New Jersey[SNJ], 2018).
