THE IMPORTANCE OF A SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER
Teaching is said to be the noblest of all profession, as they are supposed to be the
architects of human life. Right after the parents or the primary family members, teachers are the
one who impart values, knowledge and skill in children. I, as a language teacher myself, wish to
be a facilitator, rather a trainer while teaching children, nurturing their natural skills and
inquisitiveness through the classroom activities.
In this regard, language teachers hold a special place in education, as they develop the
communication skill and understanding of the culture in the children. The duty of a second
language teacher is even more crucial, as they familiarize the children with a language other than
their mother-tongue. It is more complex than learning the native language, as the children will
not be able to hear it around themselves, or relate to it in their daily lives.
However, through teaching a foreign language, the teacher does not only impart the
knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, they also open the windows of a new culture to the
students. A teacher should always be aware of this fact, and carefully avoid any misappropriation
or misrepresentation of the foreign culture. At the same time, they must be respectful to the
native culture, so that the imparting of new language does not disrespect or depreciate them. In
any way, imparting the knowledge of a new language should avoid instilling cultural supremacy
in any form.
