SELF EVALUATION OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSING PRACTICE
Strengths
As mentioned in learning plan 1, I have graduated from my nursing degree course and currently
working in acute care ward of a hospital, in a shelter and in a home group as well. Thus I have a bit of
experience in psychiatric nursing practice and pretty much confident about my MSE skills as well. I
would love to gather more knowledge and experience from my work and challenge myself for greater
opportunities.
The learning plan 2 highlighted my strength in the field of engaging with the patients with the
terms of the therapeutic relationship establishment. As a nurse in the acute psychiatric ward I observed
many eating disorders in a number of patients and I enjoy giving diagnostic presentations along with
nursing care to these patients.
The learning plan 3 includes my experience as a clinical psychiatric nurse and this experience
helped me to move into the management group. As an excellent nurse I was able to plan and implement
care for the patients and now I enjoy mentoring the junior nurses and managing the group of nurses as a
result of the long experience I had.
In learning plan 4 it is clearly visible that as a nurse I am very keen about my own learning and as
of my knowledge it can be helpful in my Continuing Competency Practice build up. In order to gain more
knowledge and acquire competency as a psychiatric nurse I had attended many NNPBC education system
and involved in the BCCNP professional practice and Standard committee as well.
Learning Needs
According to the learning plan 1 my primary disability is to conduct the mental status
examination (MSE) in a detailed manner with different patients. Whereas, my fellow nurses can gather
more information from their patients and I do not have that ability; however, I think more experience in
the process would help me in betterment of my skill and also following other experience nurses would
also be helpful.
As mentioned in the learning plan 2 I feel like I need more experience and understanding about

the disorders of the patients such as the eating disorder. As a residence of out skirts of urban area I need
to learn in an online system which also can be identified as a challenge for me.
In learning plan 3 my findings about my lack in professionalism are about my lesser experience
in the management field. As an excellent clinical nurse I find myself involved in clinical processes than
the management of the patients and the staffs. Thus the nurses are dependent on my clinical decision
makings more and I find my inability in the leadership processes. On this context I have to gain
experience and also need to study some leadership managements to manage my staffs accordingly.
Learning plan 4 depicts the incompetence I have in the context of RPN entry level competencies.
I am interested in research processes of psychiatric nursing and found that I have lot to discover about the
clinical processes which could possibly be done through the knowledge gathering from the research
works. However, I have a little knowledge and understanding about the clinical research work.
