Sensory Disabilities and PTSD
Sensory disability also termed as sensory impairment defines the impairment of any of the senses
in an individual. The senses include seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting and it may be
spatial senses as well. The most common type of sensory disabilities include blindness and
deafness.
Dual Sensory Impairment
This is the health compromised condition which involves an impairment of both vision and
hearing. This is considered as a concern as the individual finds difficulty in acquiring the
surrounding information, reciprocating and communicating back. Such health compromised
individuals can be divided into two groups-
 Congenital deaf-blindness – This is considered when an individual has impaired sight
and hearing since birth.
 Acquired deaf-blindness- This is when an individual acquires the impairment later in
his life.

Sensory Integration therapy
This integration therapy utilises special therapies that exploits the tactile, vestibular and
proprioceptive senses of an individual.

PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) defines the stressed condition of an individual that
impacts their mental health after getting affected by distressing event like accident, sexual assault
or similar instances that pose a threat to the life of the person.
Healthy individual vs. PwD (People with disabilities)
The individual with a sound mental and physical state and maintain healthy social living is
considered a healthy individual.
Impairment in any one of the well beings, mental, physical and social that affects the well-being
of a person. That individual is considered to be in the PwD category.
