A COMPREHENSIVE SEO APPROACH TO
RANK NEW WEBSITES ON SEARCH
ENGINES
AIM
The concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has increased in importance for websites owners. It
has become difficult for websites not optimized for SEO to be visible online and get visitors. Search
engine optimisation is a process that involves techniques, tactics, and methodologies of strategies that
increase visitors to a website by having a high ranking placement in search results of search engines
(Jantsch and Singleton, 2016). A reliable SEO process enables a new website to successfully rank high on
search results hence being visible to target visitors. The aim of the following project is to detail a
comprehensive SEO approach to rank high new websites on search results. This will enable new
websites to rank high on search engine results increasing qualified traffic that will enhance the
attainment of predetermined websites’ objectives.
RESEARCH QUESTION
What is the most comprehensive SEO approach for new websites to attain high ranking
placement on search result?
BACKGROUND STUDY
Websites are an important part of computing. Websites have continually changed how people
work and how technology is consumed. Experts have been able to remotely collaborate and work
together while consumers are able to access technology more conveniently through websites
(Hui, Shigang, Jinhua and Jianli, 2012). It is important for a website to be found online in order
to serve its purpose to its intended audience. The increase in the number of websites necessitated
a search engine to retrieve and present them to the most appropriate audience (searcher(s). The
search engines are now an important part of finding websites online and they crawl through the
internet, index and rank websites accordingly. For the past two decades, the number of websites
online has tremendously increased to over 1.8 billion making visibility an issue of concern
(Shafiee, Rahimzadeh, and Haghighizade 2016). This situation gave birth to the concept of SEO
and with the mounting competition of websites visibility has made the concept more complex.
The situation is even more complex for a new website.

SEO (Search engine optimization) is defined as a methodology of strategies, tactics and
techniques used to increase the number of visitors to a certain website by haven attained high-
ranking placement in a search results page (Dover and Dafforn, 2011). Wang and Zhang (2011),
defines SEO concept as basically a measurable and repeatable process that can be used to send
signals to a search engine that a website is worth showing on search results. A website needs to
be optimized for search engine high ranking. Search engine refers to a software system designed
for carrying out web search in a systematic way when the information is searched (Amerland,
2013). The search engines use algorithms that determine which websites’ pages to rank in order
of relevance and quality. Search engine optimization techniques, strategies and tactics, therefore,
have to reflect search engine requirements to achieve top website ranking. Some of the widely
used search engines by the number of searches are; Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com, Baidu,
Wolframalpha etc. Google alone gets more than a billion searches daily making it the most used
search engine (Killoran, 2013).
SEO Mind Map
Mind Map for SEO
The current concept of search engine optimization has evolved with innovation and the advancement of
search engines. The first search engine Archie was created in 1990 by Alan Emtage and was a simple
finder of information from other servers on the internet at the time. In 1993, a group of Stanford
University created Artitext that revolutionized how information on the internet was catalogued (Somani

and Suman, 2011). This search engine started sorting results on the internet based on keywords found
on content and backend optimization. In the same year, Matthew Gray created Wandex search engine
and Martijn introduced ALIWED that allowed people to submit websites on their own to search engines.
In the year 1994, Yahoo, Lycos, Alta Vista, and Infoseek were created. In 1997, Ask.com search engine
was introduced followed by the giant Google.com in 1997. Bing search engine that is owned by
Microsoft was later introduced in 2009. In the 1990 and early 2000s, search was simple and visibility of a
website was simple too. Search engines became widely used and site owners started to compete to
appear top on the search results. This led to site owner starting to get wiser and taking some simple
actions that improved their ranking. They realized that the search engines results could be manipulated
and more money made from the internet. The search engine results in 90s and early 2000 matched the
number of keywords from searchers queries on websites to determine its ranking on search results. This
limited approach by the search engines on results led to site owners repeating specific keywords on
their websites as many times as possible to improve ranking. This led to keyword stuffing that
compromised the quality of search results and it was necessary for search engines to introduce backlinks
as assurance for high-quality website pages on search results. People colluded and started using
excessive backlinks to meet the search engine requirement. This led to spammy backlinks making it
impossible for search engines to provide high quality and relevant search results. According to Somani,
and Suman, (2011), the predominant goal for commercial search engines was advertising that
undermined the provision of quality search results to users. It is in this spirit that Page and Brin
developed PageRank technology that ranked websites pages based on quality and not just keywords
alone. This move provided a clear path for SEO as it is known today. The webmasters got the
opportunity to rank website without the use of fishy behaviours that were done in the 90s. Early 2000s
saw Google beginning to take over in the search engine technology and started providing guidelines for
white SEO. In 2003-2004, the search engines took a broader shape of search results being more than just
text (words) content. This change in search engine algorithms settled the issue of keywords stuffing. The
year 2005 was one of the biggest years that changed SEO. Three major search engines; Google, Yahoo
and MSN united for the Nofollow Attribute. This development decreased spammy links and comments
making search results more relevant. Another big year for SEO was 2009 that saw Bing entering the
search engine market. Bing gave priority to keywords in URL, favoured capitalized words and pages from
large websites (Killoran, 2013). Google later in the year 2009 introduced Caffeine algorithm that
speeded crawling, integrated indexing, expanded index and ranking within a short period of time
(Rehman and Khan, 2013). This year saw webmaster and other content development having to optimize
content and websites for search engines. According to Rehman and Khan (2013), search engines
continually make updates that require continuous website updates to rank high or maintain a high
ranking in search results.
Nowadays, search engines are smart and are able to show relevant and high-quality search results than
never before. According to Somani and Suman (2011), search engines hide some factors that they use to
rank websites to avoid malicious behaviours. He argues that if all factors that search engines use are
provided, people will misuse the system to get high ranking even when their website is not of the
highest relevance score and quality. Shih, Chen, and Chen, (2013), found that different search engines
take different time period to crawl and fully index a website. This factor delays the visibility of a new
Document Page
website and he recommends submission of a new website. They also established that SEO can be
measurable and repeatable and can guarantee website ranking for specific keywords. On the contrary,
Shafiee, Rahimzadeh, and Haghighizade (2016) differed with Shih, Chen, and Chen, (2013), in their
research where they found that one cannot guarantee high ranking by use of SEO as keywords
continually evolve and search results differ from one locality to another. Patil Swati, Pawar, and Patil
Ajay (2013), in a series of surveys, found that SEO has to comprise a process that continuously adheres
to basic search engines requirements. This means that a website with valuable content can rank even
without further optimization for instance keywords research. They concluded that webmasters and site
owners have to master contributing factors to high ranking placement on search results. Moreno and
Martinez (2013) stated that there was a need for academic-based research on SEO approach. They
found that the freely available online content to be biased and persuasive to convince people to either
enrol to their SEO courses or hire them as SEO experts. They also found that 90% of the content
available online about SEO was private agencies whose information cannot be established.
RESEARCH VALUE
Every website owner wants their website to rank first on the search results. The research will detail a
comprehensive SEO approach that will guarantee a high ranking for a newly published website. First, the
research will enable site visibility. The website will rank on the first page making it visible to the target
audience. Secondly, the SEO approach will enable site owners to place their websites ahead of their
competitions. This will help site owners increase their market share and grow in the market. Thirdly, the
comprehensive approach will make new websites friendly to search engines. A comprehensively
optimized website will be friendly to search engine making it easy to crawl and index the website. Lastly,
a comprehensive SEO approach will save new website owners money. SEO is more cost effective as
compared to other types of search engine marketing such as Pay per Click Marketing (PPC) (Lu, Perdisci,
and Lee, 2011). The new website will be visible on the search result for a longer period of time and will
not be changed for appearing on the first page of search engine results.
MOTIVATION FOR THE RESEARCH
The research is motivated by the need to document the most comprehensive SEO approach for new
websites. The research is also motivated by a set of skills that I require to run a vibrant online based tech
company.
SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH
The scope of the research will involve finding out a comprehensive approach to attaining high ranking on
search engines. This will involve researching on factors that affect the quality and authority of a website
on search results. This can be categorized into three main areas; technical SEO, on-page SEO and off-
page SEO. Technical SEO will involve factors that affect the functionality of the website. These factors
include website size, design, and hosting. The technical factors affect the search engine ability to crawl
and index the website. On-site SEO involves the content and other elements that are found on a
Document Page
website page. These are the factors that help search engine to understand the website page. These
factors include keywords, title optimization, image SEO, internal links, structured data markup, and
content length. The off-site SEO will involve link building with other websites. This will be promoting the
website to gain reputation by sending signals of trust to search engines. The research will also involve
the creation of 4 new websites; 1)one without technical SEO consideration, 2) one without on-site SEO
considerations, 3) one without off-site SEO consideration, and 4) one with all SEO considerations.
AIM/ OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH
The main objective of the research is to outline a comprehensive SEO approach that can be used
to rank high a new website within the first month of publication. The following table shows the
specific objectives that will be achieved to meet the main objective of the research.

SOURCES AND KNOWLEDGE
Journal relevant for publication
The following research will be relevant for publication on the International Journal of Computers and
Applications. The journal is a peer-reviewed journal that is published by the Foundation of Computer
Science (FCS). The journal; publishes topics in information systems, graphics and imaging, CIO-
informatics, signal processing, algorithms, software testing, human-computer interactions, distributed
systems, pattern recognition and embedded system. The IJCA is indexed by major academic search
engines such as Google Scholar, ProQuest CSA Technology Research Database, PennState University,
NASA ADS, UlrichWeb and EBSCO. This means that the journal has the potential to reach a wide range of
researchers and academicians around the world. Therefore, publishing in the journal will not only be
relevant but also be an avenue to reach a wide range of academicians and researchers.
IJCA Standards
The IJCA journal has some set standards for publications. Some of the standards that I will
include in the project are;
Using Times Roman font family
Placing table captions on top of the tables
The headings of all sections will be in capital letters.
Subsections heading will have first letter in Capital and other small letters.
Relevant Researches Published
One of the relevant researches to this project is Rama Satish and Kavya research that was published in
IJCA journal in 2018. They had submitted their research in 2017. The title of the project was “A
framework for big data pre-processing and search engine optimization using HMGA-ACO: a hierarchical
optimization approach”. The research aimed to find out how algorithms utilize optimized data for
accuracy and precision.
Another relevant research to this project is of John B. Killoran that was published on IEEE Transactions
on Professional Communication Journal in the year 2013. The project title was “How to use search
engine optimization techniques to increase website visibility.” The research aimed to answer what
contributes to search engine rankings and what web content creators and webmasters do to find an
audience online.
ETHICS, LEGAL, SOCIAL, SECURITY, AND PROFESSIONAL
CONSIDERATIONS
The project will involve the creation of websites that will be used to research the concept of
SEO. The following are the issues in the project execution;
Document Page
1. Duplicated information. The websites will have similar information that will lead to duplicated
information online. This is against professional practices for SEO as it can lead to the websites being
blacklisted by search engines.
2. Anonymous identity. The websites will not disclose the identities of individuals for their
privacy.
3. False information. The website's content will have information that does not represent any
venture. This information might be misleading to visitors who come across the website. The
website will have a privacy policy page for disclaimer.
4. Website security. The website will need security to avoid hacking or internet virus that can
cause damage to the website and other software used in the project
