1REFLECTIVE STUDY
Introduction
Servant leadership refers to a leadership where the main objective of the leader is to serve
the people and it is different from traditional leadership. In case of traditional leadership, the
main objective is earning sufficient profits for survival of the company in the market (Spears &
Lawrence, 2016). The main objective of a servant leader is to help people develop properly that
they can perform their activities in the best possible way. The leader puts the needs of the
employees above any other objectives. The main aim of the paper is to highlight how the concept
of servant leadership can be applied to actual workplace.
Discussion
Presently I am working in an organization, where the leader is an autocratic leader and
therefore he believes in carrying out all decisions by himself without consulting others. As a
result of such a behavior on his part, the leader is not liked by the most of the employees in the
organization. He fails to identify the importance of employee’s participation for the success of
the company. The company is facing a high employee’s turnover ratio because of the same
reason. In order to overcome all the present problems, the concept of Servant leadership can be
practiced by the leader. By adopting the same technique, the leader will be able to understand the
needs of the employees in a better way and he will keep our needs and expectations at the center
of all other goals. In order to improve his relationship with us, the leader must understand our
needs and must create an environment where we all can share our suggestions and feedbacks
without any fear of rejection. This will not only help the leader in encouraging us and creating a
sense of belongingness among us but it will also help in reducing the employees turnover and

therefore increase the productivity. According to the servant leadership theories, the leader can
create a sense of commitment among the individuals by applying the same leadership style. It
will help us in developing ourselves and perform better by acquiring various skills such as team
work, serving the society, the leadership style can help us in explaining the importance of
carrying out ethical practices for the purpose of becoming a sustainable organization. This style
of leadership can help in improving our psychological health by reducing the strain on us and by
listening to our feedbacks and suggestions. These leaders can help in improving our satisfaction
through proper rewarding systems, performance evaluation and development of all our skills.
Conclusion
From the above discussion it clear that servant leadership can help the leaders in growing
properly and as a result the organization grows because they keep the goals of the individuals
above their own. These leaders believe in serving the people as against other leaders who believe
that other people need to serve them. Traditional leaders believe that the main objective is
earning profits such that the organization can survive in the market. However the paper identifies
and shows how the servant leadership skills can be applied in organizations and it can also help
an organization in becoming successful.
