Introduction
What is a servo motor
A servo motor is type of electric which is controlled by aid of servo
technique. When the motor is employed as a controlled device with the
help of the servo technique in a DC motor, therefore it is referred to as DC
servo motor. But if the moor is controlled by an AC power then the same
motor is known as an AC servo motor.

The difference between AC and DC
servo motor
DC servo motor
The power output is very high.
Its efficiency is very high.
More problems are less.
Brushes produce radio frequency noise.
It is noisy operation.
DC amplifier employed has a drift.
AC servo motor
AC has a low output power ranging from 0.5 W to 100 W.
Its efficiency is very low it ranges from 5 to 20%.
It lacks radio frequency disturbance .
There is less stability problems .
Compare to DC servo motor AC motor is comparatively smooth and stable working.
The amplifier employed lacks a drift.

How does servo motor work?
This type of motor always makes a turn of only 90° in each direction hence giving a
total of 180° movement.
Servo motor is frequently employed is the one appropriate to be used
in a closed-loop control system

Advantages of servo motor
When a weighty load is put on this motor, there will be increase in
current to the motor coil caused by driver as it tries to make the motor
rotate.
There is a possibility of higher operation speed.
Closed loop control
Very efficient lower motor heating
Document Page
Disadvantages of servo motor
Higher cost
Because the servomotor attempts to run conferring to the pulse
command, and lags behind, it is inappropriate for accuracy of rotation
control
When it is stationary, the rotor of the motor continues to operate back
and forth for a single pulse, therefore it is unsuitable for prevention of
vibration.

Applications of servo motor
This type of motor is employed in robotics to trigger motions of actuators,
making the the arm to have accurate angle.
This motor is employed in starting, moving and stopping conveyor belts
carrying goods in several stages. For example, packaging, product
labelling and bottling.
This motor can be built into the camera to help correct a lens to advance
focus images.
The motor is employed in robotic cars in controlling the wheels of the
robot, resulting to a lot of torque to enable movement, starting and
stopping the car and controlling the cars´ speed.
The motor is employed in automated door openers to help govern the
public doors like in hospitals and supermarkets.

Conclusion
There are two main types of servo motors namely the AC or DC motors.
Initially all servo motors were DC motors since the only kind of control
for bigger currents was done via SCRs. With the use of transistors to
control big currents and also to switch bigger currents at a relatively
higher frequencies, the AC servomotor was then adopted and became
more popular . Initially servomotors were basically developed for servo
amplifiers.
