3CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ACCOUNTING
Introduction
Proper utilization of accounting information by the investors has major significance in the accounting
profession because it helps in addressing the crucial issue of whether the investors have used the accounting
information for the purpose of investment decision-making. In this situation, Capital Market Research helps in
the exploration of the reaction of the investors towards the release of various information that includes
accounting information. This helps in exploring the reaction of the share prices towards various released
information along with the accounting information (Kristoufek and Vosvrda, 2013). Capital market research
helps in addressing two crucial aspects; that are the impact of the release of accounting information on the share
price and the particular types of accounting information that is relevant for the valuation of the share prices
within the organizations that is the information which is the cause of the change or reaction in the share prices.
Therefore, it is of utmost importance to consider the impact of the accounting and other information on the share
prices of the firms. The main aim of this report is to analyse the information that may have impacted the price of
the shares of The Reject Shop, an ASX listed company, by taking into consideration the share prices of last two
years which are 2018 and 2017.
Share Prices React to Information from Various Sources
It needs to be mentioned that the information released by the companies related to the companies’
earnings has great impact on the share prices; such as increase or decrease in revenue, increase or decrease in
expenses, profit or loss, investment and many others. Apart from the earnings related information, there are
many other things or news that have major impact on the share price of the companies (Bhattacharya, Desai and
Venkataraman, 2013). Some of them are the news regarding the resignation of the senior executives, rumours of
takeover posted on various discussion sites in internet, issues raised by the auditors, industry-wide changes like
the associated impact of the introduction of a new legislation and others. Therefore, it is needed to take into
consideration both types of information. In case there is any reaction in the share price, it is an indicator that the
information has content. Equally, in case there is not any reaction in the share price, it is an indicator that the
news failed in acting to the cause of the market (Cont, Kukanov and Stoikov, 2014).
