Topic — To analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout and suggest mitigation strategies
Aim
To analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout and suggest mitigation strategies.
Objectives
To study the concept of burnout in health and social care sector.
To analyse the factors leading to nurses burnout.
To recommend some mitigation strategies regarding the nurses' burnout.
Background
Health and social care sector is an important sector which helps in understanding by
supporting the patients and nurses which is being determined by different ways and processes
followed within the sector. Burnout is defined as the form of exhaustion caused by constantly
feeling swamped and low. Burnout is the result of excessive and prolonged mental, emotional
and physical stress through which the nurses feel stressed. The major concern in the health and
social care sector is nurses burnout. This impacts their delivering the services and quality care to
the patients who are in need. Nurses burnout is the state of mental, emotional and physical
exhaustion caused by sustained work — related stressors or stress periods which occur in their
professional career on the daily routine (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and
Medicine, 2019).
The aim of the aim of the study is to analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout and
suggest mitigation strategies. This is the major concern of the study which is being depicted and
is analysed for the detail description within this research which is conducted. The factors of
nurses burnout will help in determining the pressure which the nurses are facing while taking
care of the patients. With the help of analysing the factors of nurses burnout, the reason behind
the nurses' burnout is also identified in significant manner.

Rationale
As nurses burnout is the major issue and problem within the health and social care sector,
it is very important to analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout. Nurses burnout has been
the major concern within the health and social care sector. This helps in understanding the major
causes and factors due to which the nurses are facing the burnout. To effectively identify the
ways sue to which the problems have been occurring, it is significant to have the basis of
understanding of the causes leading to the exhaustion and stressed nurses working in their
professional career (Dewasiri and et.al., 2018).
To analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout is important than the other topics as it
will help to understand that what are the reasons which are considered within the health and
social sector at large scale. This topic will help to create value of the research and will be able to
provide the data and information in significant manner with the help of articles and journals. This
topic will also help in justifying some key definitions and measures to what the nurses are facing
in the health and social care sector. The description and analysis will help in determining about
this topic which is being identified as a major problem which the nurses are facing at large scale.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Theme 1 — Concept of burnout in health and social care sector
According to Bridgeman and et.al., (2018), burnout is the form of exhaustion caused by
constantly feeling swamped and feeling low. Burnout is faced by the individual which is the
result of emotional, physical and mental stresses at large scale. Burnout is the concept which
helps in describing that it is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion and a sense of low personal
accomplishment which is leading to decreased performance at the work. The major burnout
which is being described here is about the nurses which is affecting their performance within the
health and social care sector. Nurses within this sector are feeling more stressed and are
exhausted towards their duties and while providing quality care to the patients.
As per Waddill-Goad, (2019), nurses burnout is the major concern within the health and
social care sector and the main causes of it are — long hours of performing their duties and
responsibilities within the health care sector, lack of sleep, emotional strain while taking care of
the patient, lower quality of care, lack of support. These are some major causes due to which the
nurses burnout aspect is analysed. There is one major cause which UK is facing higher rates of

burnout in the context of nurses burnout and that is — the nurses of UK have lack of children
which is affecting their personal life and professional career. The financial pressures and
working for long hours has made the nurses' burnout increase at the highest rate. Due to increase
in the nurses' burnout, there is high possibility that the nurses are significantly at the higher rate
of suicide than other professions. A study was conducted which showed that nurses of UK are at
23% higher risk of suicide than the national average.
As stated by Mansour and Tremblay, (2019), the nurses within the health and social care
sector are facing the higher levels of burnout which is the main thing to be focused at. 28% of the
nurses of NHS are quitting their jobs within three years and this has been increasing since 2013
which is estimated as 50% increase per year. This is the estimated status which has been
addressed while analysing the nurses' burnout prospect at large scale within the health and social
care sector. There are some other challenges also which the nurses are facing on daily basis
leading to burnout. These challenges are — impossible workloads, fear of exposure to Covid —
19, risking the health of their own and their families. Also, some nurses are also facing the
problems and issues of bullying and harassment at the workplace which is making them feel
more stressed to emotions, physical awkwardness etc. This is affecting the quality of patient care
which is making it hard for the patients and the nurses to evaluate their roles and responsibilities
at large scale.
As stated by Srivastava and Dey, (2019), these are some major causes which are being
analysed for the aspects and perspectives of nurses burnout. UK is facing major problems and
issues which are considered and are analysed in the perspective of nurses burnout. This issue and
problem is affecting their professional care and the quality of care which should be provided to
the patients appropriately and in significant manner. The current situation in UK health and
social care sector is not sustainable as this is impacting the economic growth and development of
the country. It is important that the key measures are undertaken to ensure that the nurses are
provided with proper care benefits which are considered at large scale in appropriate manner
within health and social care sector.
Sillero and Zabalegui, (2018), states that UK has been facing the major problem of nurses
burnout through which it has been analysed that there are concerns which are affecting their
health and social life. Nurses burnout is increasing rapidly and this is being concerned as
problem and issue within the health and social care sector. The nurses are facing the major

problem which is affecting their professional career, and they are not able to take care of the
patients appropriately. Nurses burnout is the major problem which is increasing the emotional
disturbance among the nurses of UK and making them prone to many other illness.
Theme 2 — Factors leading to nurses burnout
According to Thomas and et.al., (2019), nurses burnout has become the major problem
and issue which the nurses of UK in the health and social care sector are facing. There are
variety of measures due to which the nurses burnout factors are analysed and these are
mentioned as — high stress work environment, lack of support, long working hours, sleep
deprivation etc. Apart from this, there is major factor which is being identified and is addressed
as — emotional strain from patients care which is major problem occurring due to which the
nurse burnout has been increasing day by day at large scale. The standard ratio for the nurses
being allotted with the patients are - 1:3 in teaching hospitals and 1:5 in general hospitals and a
post of senior nurse.
Wei and et.al., (2021), states that the nurses are facing the major burnout due to their
personal problems which is indicating that lack of children is also one major factor which is
leading to nurses burnout. Due to long job hours the nurses are facing the issues and problems of
being stressed and this is indicating that this is a serious problem in UK health and social care
sector. In NHS, there is typical 12 hours shift of nurses and this has caused the stress levels high
leading to nurse burnout. It has been recommended to shorten the working hours and reduce it to
8 hours so that proper quality care and health facilities are provided to patients. The nurses'
burnout is also leading them to have tough times while doing their jobs.
As denoted by Dall’Ora and et.al., (2020), the patient care has been affected and this
creating hindrances in their professional career making them leave their jobs. This is the major
problem which the nurses are facing and this is leading them to be more stressed. There are
aspects which are considered within the health and social cares system. The nurses' breakout is
considered as one of the important key aspect for ensuring that the nurses are taking care of their
health. This is the major concern due to which the failure in taking care of the patients within the
health and social care sector. The nurses' burnout is analysed as the stress and depression which
the nurses are facing and this is the major problem which is being identified. These major factors
are addressing to how the nurses' burnout is being analysed. Failure in taking care of the patients

is also leading to the nurses' burnout, and they are feeling stressed. Due to the number of patients
the nurses are allotted, it has created pressure for the nurses to provide quality care to them. Also,
due to the personal life reasons there has been the analysis of how the nurses are falling into
stress and are burned out.
As per Bakhamis and et.al., (2019), it s very important to ensure that UK health and
social care sector is undertaking the concerns and preventive measures for making the nurses feel
comfortable and are not allotted long working hours as 28% of the nurses are quitting the jobs
and this is ensuring the aspects as to how the nurses are to be provided comfort in their jobs so
that they are not feeling the stress and are providing quality care to the patients appropriately and
at large scale. Therefore, the levels of stress has caused burnout in nurses and this is considerate
of the aspects of causes and factors which are indicative of the nurses' burnout. There is high risk
of nurses facing the problem of burnout in UK and this has turned out to be a very serious issue.
Friganović, Selič and Ilić, (2019), states that the factors analysing and leading to nurses
burnout is making them fall into the emotional and disturbances which is making them leave
their jobs. Proper actions and strategies should be framed for identifying and putting the
stoppage to such harmful factors which is making the nurses' burnout. The nurses' burnout is
depicted as major problem within UK which is affecting the care and quality of services to be
provided to patients. Therefore, care and concern should also be taken into regard for the nurses
who are facing this challenge of burnout.
Problem Statement
The problem statement which has been addressed within this research is that the nurses in
health and social care sector are facing the issues of nurses burnout. There are many causes and
factors which are leading to nurses burnout. This has become a serious issue as there has been
high rate of increase in the nurse burnout in UK within the health and social care setting. The
problem here is that the nurse burnout is leading to stress and depression among the nurses and
this has been identified as a serious problem. It has been found out that there are major causes
and factors which are leading to nurse burnout at higher scale (Sillero and Zabalegui, 2018).
The significance of the research which has been conducted demonstrates that the factors
depicting nurses burnout will address to key factors and analysis based on the studies and articles
through which the information has been collected.

Research Justification
Importance of this study leads to analysis of how the information is being gathered. This
research is important as it helps to justify the context ion which the research is appropriately
framed. The research is also valuable and plays significant importance by collecting and storing
of all the data and information in appropriate manner. The research has led to much information
and key findings based on the topic which is to analyse the factors that lead to nurses burnout in
significant manner. There is explanation of the factors due to which the nurses are facing major
burnout (Whittaker and et.al., 2018).
The research is also emphasizing on some data and statistics being addressed and has led
to much information and data for the research to be framed effectively. There are aspects as to
how the research is being analysed and this helps in understanding that research is addressing to
major concerns effectively.
Research Question
What are the factors that lead to nurses burnout and mitigation strategies for the
same?
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
Research design is defined as the framework of research methods and techniques which
are chosen by the researcher. There are three types of research design and these are —
Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods. Qualitative research is the research in which the
data is obtained through open-ended and conversational communication. Quantitative research is
defined as the systematic investigation by gathering the numerical data to explain particular
phenomena (Aspers and Corte, 2019). The researcher will follow qualitative research design.
This research design will be used as it helps in driving creativity to be a driving force. It is the
process which helps in understanding the attitudes. The major limitation of the research is that it
losses the data as it not the statistics form of data. It creates misleading data.
The cross-sectional study type will be chosen. This is a good choice for the research
question as it will help in collecting the data from many individuals at single point of time. The
method of the research will be qualitative which will help in channelizing and acquiring the data
Document Page
and gather the information correctly. Choosing qualitative research data is a good choice as it
will help in understanding and denoting aspects which will be included within the research
appropriately and this will strengthen the research in significant manner. Qualitative research
also helps in saving money of the research which is being conducted. The research also provides
insights towards the industry on which the research will be prepared appropriately (Sawatsky,
Ratelle and Beckman, 2019).
The study will have ethical approval from LTU. It is necessary that the ethical approval
form to be generated so that there it will be clear that all the ethics were performed while
undertaking the research. It is important to address and consider that ethical consideration form
is used within the research in appropriate manner.
Data Collection
Data collection is the procedure of collecting, measuring and analysing accurate insights
within the research using different techniques in appropriate manner. There are two different
types of data collection methods and these are — Primary and Secondary Data. Primary data is
the data which is generated by the researcher and this it is specially designed for understanding
and solving research problem (Lin and et.al., 2018). Primary data includes conducting
interviews, surveys, questionnaire and experiments. Secondary data is the data which is has been
collected through primary sources and are made available for researchers to use it in their own
research. The researcher in this research will use primary data which will help in collecting the
data by gathering the information first hand. For this, questionnaire will be conducted which will
be help in analysing the concerns related to the data and gathering of information.
The researcher will use primary data because it is more accurate, it delivers updated
information, there is also more control over the data and the privacy of the data is maintained by
the researcher. Questionnaire will be framed for the research with the healthcare professionals.
This will help in analysing and understanding that how the primary data is being collected
(Favaretto and et.al., 2020). There are also some major disadvantages which are there within the
primary data and these are mentioned as — while collecting primary data more time is
consumed, it is very costly, it requires more labour. With the help of questionnaire which will be
conducted by the researcher, all the information and data will be gathered in accurate manner.
This will help the researcher in addressing to more effective and appropriate formation of the
Document Page
research which will be conducted. Future monitoring process will be identified within the
research which will be addressed to how the research is justifying its concerns and is taking
initiative towards it.
Participant Recruitment and Research Procedure
Sampling is defined as the group of people, items or objects which are taken from a
larger population for measurement. The sample is the representative of the population to ensure
that the findings are generalized from the sampling method to the population as whole. There are
two types of sampling and these are — Probabilistic and Non — probabilistic sampling methods.
Probabilistic sampling method is defined as the selection of the sample from the population when
the selection is based on the random selection etc (Garavan and et.al., 2018). Non probabilistic
sampling is the method of selecting the units from the population which can be done using
subjective method appropriately. The chosen method for samples to be collected will be
simple random sampling method. The sample size will be taken as 30 healthcare
professionals. The location will be UK. The healthcare professionals will be of UK as
participants which will help in providing the information and data regarding the situation which
the nurses are facing.
Questionnaire will be conducted for 30 healthcare professionals and this will help in
knowing effectiveness and efficiency which is being denoted at large scale. The research will be
conducted and this will help in knowing that with the help of gathering samples, it becomes
important to address and to analyse value of the research. The researcher will use probabilistic
sampling which will help in understanding the higher reliability of the research which will be
conducted in significant manner (Puhan and et.al., 2018). There is also increased efficiency
within the research which helps in knowing that probabilistic sampling is the effective ways in
which the research will be framed in appropriate manner. The major advantage of this research is
that there is absence of systematic error and there is no biasing while collecting the samples
within research.

Data Analysis
Data analysis is defined as the process of inspecting, transforming and modelling of data
which helps in discovering useful information to make informed decisions. It involves the
interpretation of the data gathered by using the logical and analytical reasoning to determine the
trends or patterns (Berko and et.al., 2021). There are tow types of data analysis and these are —
Thematic and SPSS. Thematic analysis is defined as the method of analysing the qualitative data
for which the information is gathered with the help of themes. SPSS is the software program
which is denoted and addressed in the quantitative analysis of data. The researcher will use
thematic analysis and themes will be framed accordingly.
Document Page
With the help of preparing the themes, the researcher will be able to identify the change
over time and association for the results which will be gathered and conducted with the help of
preparing the themes. The data will be summarized and analysed with the help of interpretation
which will be done within the research. There will be aspects as to how effectively an in
appropriate manner the research will analyse the key findings from the information and data
made available with the help of interpretation (Barlas and et.al., 2020). By framing the themes,
theoretical and personal knowledge is applied and this helps in adding value within the research
in appropriate manner. This help in understanding and analysing aspects which are related to
how effectively and in appropriate manner the themes will be framed along with providing all
essential information and knowledge based on the research. The researcher will be able to
provide all essential information which is helping to incur the best information possible. Thus,
the findings will be summarized and analysed by providing all essential data and information
required for the research in effective and significant manner.
Ethical Considerations
Ethical considerations within research is the set of principles which helps in guiding
research designs and practices. There are some major principles within ethical consideration and
these are mentioned as — voluntary participation, confidentiality, informed consent and results
of communication. These ethical principles for the research will be considered because it will
help in knowing and understanding aspects which will help in gaining the confidence of the
participants by not displaying or giving out their information and results obtained from the
research (Suri, 2020).
The participants will be asked to sign the consent form so that it is not identified that the
participants are forcefully been taken to answer the questions which have been asked them. The
participants will be provided the opportunity to read and analyse their results so that they are
aware of the answers to which they have been questioned. The participant information sheet will
be framed in respect to the information and data being gathered from the participants. Along with
this, the participants will be informed that they can withdraw any time from the research which
will be conducted for getting their results. The researcher will seek the ethical approval from
Leeds Trinity University. The research will be addressed and will help in constituting the ethical
consideration form to be framed in appropriate and systematized manner at large scale (Arifin,
