INTRODUCTION
Topic: MANAGING COMMUNICATIONS: Communication is a critical tool for organisational
success.
This essay will argue about the significance of open, reliable and transparent
communication for the overall growth and development of an organization. There is a need to
understand the contribution of promoting a positive communication to run the operational
activities smoother and able to improve the workplace culture in effective manner (Martini,
Pareto and Bosch, 2013). It is going to also reflect upon the conceptual framework of
communication, its channels, levels, flows and alongside the triggering points of
miscommunication.
It is going to have the following outline where the first section include about the
overview and communication channels, next is focusing on the Levels of communication, thirdly
is gaining insights about organizational mis/communication, fourth section is highlighting the
need of Communication flows and lastly the contribution of Mass communication for branding.
These components are important to facilitate the communication management at large scale to
maintain the decorum and code of practices at any organization.
PART 1
Communication is defined as the medium of exchange of opinions, ideas, thoughts and
information between two individuals or parties. This has become an essential commodity for
conducting businesses with the onset of globalization and digitalization. Here various audiences
are involved such as shareholders, clients, employees etc. and need clarity and transparency to
outperform one another for the betterment and progressive works at all the levels (Boyer and
et.al., 2015). The foundation of communication rose from rhetoric that led the organizational

communication into practice. For better understanding, Aristotle explained three critical factors
such ethos (the character of the speaker), pathos (the emotional state of the hearer) and logos (the
argument itself).
This rhetoric is applicable in today’s time however it has become more virtual than real
and requires consistency due to the availability of multiple media messages through several
platforms (Coombs, 2014). For example, political parties are taking the digital route for
campaigning and raising funds to reach the targeted audience instantly. Moreover, the
information flow has reached easily and has entered business world by creating patterns and
nurturing professional relations. There is a derivation for communication theory which was taken
from cybernetics to lay its foundation. It is important for transmitting and receiving of messages
by coding and decoding and is helpful in making deals or contracts and flourishing of new and
existing businesses properly.
In addition to this, levels of communication have been categorically divided into two
parts namely media communication and interpersonal and impersonal communication. Further,
impersonal and interpersonal communication is divided into three components such as dyadic,
small group and organizational communication. Both types are beneficial in the form of
communicating authenticate exchange of details related to the products or any other service
(Clutterbuck and Hirst, 2012). Additionally, it is useful in bridging the differences between the
formal and Informal flows of communication that make the running of operational activities
smoother. Factors such as accuracy, clarity, speed, onset of any emergency or contentment
levels must be also considered. Thus, it is imperative to know that the communication levels
must be coordinated in sync with the managerial responsibilities to avoid any conflicts or issues.

Nevertheless, this has proved beneficial for the businesses to develop, grow and progress
by attaining the goals and objectives. For example, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has
successfully transformed its banking services by making the infrastructure and bank’s mobile
application robust (Jones and et.al., 2014). This is possible only by a clear and direct
communication and exchange of information between the leaders including CEO and the
employees for bringing the changes and customers’ engagement. Henceforth, levels assist in
streamlining the sources of communication through its forms like wheel, chain and all channels
to manage the horizontal or vertical type of communication ladder (Pikhart, 2014).
With respect to miscommunication, the company’s culture symbolizes the core
principles, beliefs and moral values that make the environment and communication hassle free.
However, different people with different ethnicities and regional cultural aspects might act as
obstacles in making the ties or increasing the gaps affecting the performance management
(Lázár, 2017). It has negative consequences on the way of communications whether
interpersonal or impersonal types. Additionally, it has also reflected upon the employees’
unregulated and unintentional emotions like insecurity, fear of losing, anger or jealously. Such
scenario might lead towards creating a more unwelcoming workplace environment and
increasing the negative vibes that put hindrances while performing and leading to conflicts or
issues that might hamper the team performance.
Herein, companies are trying to incorporate a formal set of programmes to promote
healthy and teamwork spirits and avoiding the spread of any sort of counter-stories, myths and
circulation of gossips (Korovyakovskaya, Chong, Thiagarajan and Assad, 2015). For instance,
Online, digital and social media were used as the new sources of communication for the Liberal
Party of Australia during the campaigning in the year 2013. After the elections got over, the
3

Liberal Party claimed to outperform the Labour party’s campaigning and fundraisers in social
media through giving numbers in context to total page likes on Facebook, growth in its leaders’
Twitter followers and YouTube channel views as well. These parties were creating negative
image related news on all the mediums to fetch the attention of the voters and thus, the sources
used were for miscommunication and is normal for gaining success through any means (Berger,
2015).
Next is the communication flow which is again important aspect to help the businesses
flourish and grow in elevating scales. It might be horizontal, vertical, downward or upward and
should be followed in an orderly fashion. For instance, downward communication is the
exchange or flow of interaction between the superior and their subordinates or the management
and the taskforce. Here they provide instructions, details or information that help in building
commitment, offering feedbacks and advising or consulting (Batista and Narciso, 2016). There
are several forms like wheel, all channels and chain that make the entire communication
processing more transparent and reliable. These make the flow and pattern in systematic order
and promote an organised approachability in achieving the desired outputs.
Moreover, the flow is mostly formal in nature but gradually it has been changed into
Informal intra-organizational communication, Polyphony or Inter-organizational communication.
These three types do the same work as the formal one where the businesses are expanding,
connecting and developing their ideas into concrete decisions through strategic planning and
constant communication (Goergen, Mendiratta and Engel, 2013). For example, in the inter-
organizational communication, a boundary spanner and interlocker are helpful in communicating
the information flow and including rumours, gossip at external and internal level as well. Such

type is useful in gaining the competitive advantages over the rival or upcoming companies of any
sector in the markets.
Next section is the rise of mass communication that has shaped the branding skills in a
new dimension. It led to emergence of social media and usage of web 3.0 and using the viral
feeds to provide a sense of identity and better connectivity with the audience. This has made the
branding of product or service more defined and presentable through making the social media
platforms as the tools (McQuail and Windahl, 2015). Here the projection of a consistent image of
any company is required to facilitate a lasting impression on the customers or clients’ minds. For
e.g. this medium is widely used by the political parties, multinational companies or newly
formed firms, start-ups etc. to reach a widespread audience in faster and quicker modes. When
the CBA tried to make its banking services completely digitalized, it needed not only a strong
infrastructure but also a more stronger employees’ engagement which was only possible through
communication. A good leadership exhibited by CBA showed that it is possible to reach the top
positioning by taking clear decisions and transparent goals for everyone to understand in easy
manner (Vivian and Maurin, 2012). Therefore, it has led to revolutionary changes in the
communication management at the organizational levels in increasing order to manage the
dynamic surroundings for company’s success.
PART 2
This reflective account is going to be useful in making radical changes and to maintain
the performance management (Mura, 2015). After the feedback received after the first
assessment submission, I was disappointed and required to put more efforts in terms of showing
correct information without any biased or cluttered thought process. Along with this, it is
important for me to understand the differences and overcome them to fulfil my expectations and
