Introduction of food label
Food labelling is an important thing that is done by manufacturers before a food product is
taken to the market. Every product must have a label after it has been finished and packed to
avoid any confusion with other products (Chisnall, 2012). The food label can be taken to
mean putting a brief description of that particular food product on the package; the brief
description should contain all the important information about that product. The buyer will
thus be able to distinguish the product from others using the label (Andrews & Russell,
2012). The information contained in the label is quite important in serving the individual or
the public about a number of facts about the product. As I have mentioned in my
introduction, food label serves several purposes, where the main purposes served range from
the name to nutritional information. There are several ways of creating labels on the product
such as rectangular labels, square labels, circular labels, oval among many others. Each of
these types of labelling will always serve a particular purpose and appeal to people. The type
and design of labelling will always be a choice of the company or supplier and will also be
influenced by the customers’ appeal and preferences.
The meaning and importance of food label
Food label means writing brief information about a product to inform the public on some
important information about the product. The label contains the name and the general
information about the product such as the nutritional value, the manufacturing and the expiry
dates among other important information (Bharathi, 2016). Additionally, food label also plays
an important role in marketing the product. The food label may indicate nutritional value like
the content of calories or cholesterol in the food product. Whoever uses or intends to use the
product will find the accurate information about the product. Some of the labels are always
put in a waterproof package that prevents moisture and water from entering the product. The

core reason why labels are put is to provide a brief, but clear, precise, and elaborate
information about the product. The information contained in the label is quite important in
serving the individual or the public about a number of facts about the product. The company
stands to market its product through proper labelling; a good label will attract many
customers to use the product (Cadogan, 2009).
Labelling also helps to differentiate the products from other company’s products so that a
customer can easily distinguish it from others easily. This comes in form of branding and
packaging of a product thereby giving it a unique feature that can differentiate. Lastly, it is a
legal requirement that every product is labelled properly; giving important information about
the product and ensuring that the information is brief but precise enough. If the company fails
to label its product, it would be termed as a breach of the law that guides the manufacturing
of food products.
