1TOURISM ECOLABEL IN SINGAPORE
Recently, I was searching for certifications for hotel business in tourism industry
especially that indicates the sustainability performance of the concerned businesses. In a website
named ecolabel index, I found one relevant ecolabel named as Green Globe Certification. The
assessment of sustainability performance of hotels under the ecolabel is done by checking the
fulfillment of 44 core criteria within which there are more than 375 compliance indicators. For a
hotel, if I intend to get the certification I need to apply the relevant sustainability indicators,
however the indicators would vary depending on geographical and local factors in which the
hotel is situated. After doing some in-depth research, I found that criteria that are used for the
assessment are from the area of sustainable management, society, economy, cultural heritage and
environment. Given the criteria for the certification, I can suggest that it can be used for other
businesses other than hotels such as travel, restaurant and many more. The certificate is provided
to hotels across globe. Therefore, if I open a hotel in Singapore then I can get Green Globe
Certification. I forgot to mention that there is amount charged if the certification is availed and in
addition to that, the charge varies depending on the region or country of operation. In Singapore,
for a hotel with micro firm status I need to pay US$ 750 annual membership fee, however, if the
hotel is of large firm status then the charge would go up to US$ 5000 annually. Currently, I
cannot tell that consumers are well aware of the certification but I can assure that businesses and
governments are completely aware of it. In my opinion, the certification is required to improve
the tourism sector such that waste is reduced and environment and tourist locations does not get
damaged.
