CASE STUDY: LEIGH
Background Information:
Leigh is a 32 years old male who is married with a son the age of 6. Growing up, Leigh was always into different
types of sports like swimming, football, basketball however his main focus was surfing. In his teenage days and up to
his early twenties, he had a reasonably slender/athletic build and a very fast metabolism, so excess weight was never
an issue for Leigh. He never put on weight and on most occasions would eat nearly all the food in the house – his
mother would complain about just how much food he ate, but loved the fact that her boy was active, fit & healthy!
Although Leigh has always had a passion for surfing and being active on a daily basis, throughout his mid-late
twenties his activity levels gradually began to decrease as his work and family commitments became more of a
priority – Since the birth of his son (Jack), Leigh found less time to focus on being active in general, being a young
dad he wanted to focus on the family and spent more quality time with his son.
The past 5-6 years, Leigh has stopped playing all his childhood sports, has stopped all physical activities and only
occasionally plays golf with his mates but generally it is over a few drinks and there really isn’t much ‘exercise’
involved when they do so.

ob e sit y bu t he wasn’t aware of putting on excess weight as he was just too busy providing for the family and making
living.
It wasn’t until Jack (his son who is now 6) wanted Leigh to take him surfing for the first time, when Leigh realised
afterwards that moving around, and being agile was such a struggle and a lot of effort for him. Leigh realised that if
he wanted to keep up with his son, he really needed to get back into some sort of training and exercise. He really was
not impressed with himself for letting himself get this out of shape compared to what he used to be like and he has
begun to feel quite embarrassed about it.
Leigh joined the local fitness centre where you are currently working as their Personal Trainer. He is nervous about
getting started however because he feels that he is too deconditioned to even make any changes in his physique. He
has approached you to help him achieve his goals, which you gladly took him on as a client.
Relevant information you have gathered from Leigh:
After conducting an initial consult with Leigh and completing all the necessary Health-Screen Forms, you were able
to get an idea of Leigh’s situation, goals, values and background information.
The additional information you found through consultation with Leigh are as follows:
Leighs expectations on himself as extremely high, his goal is to lose 20kg in 8 weeks
Leighs at times deals with anxiety and a lot of stress due to work commitments he gets overwhelmed easy and has
told you he doesn’t manage stress very well.
Leigh is ready to make a change, and willing to do what it takes but is nervous about the journey
Leigh has a lot of self-doubt but really needs to do this for himself and his family
Leigh believes that the more exercise the better and if he really wants to lose weight he needs to eat minimal food,
and exercise for over 3 hours every day without resting.

(even though you haven’t explained that hours on exercise per day isn’t always a good thing).
You also found out that both Leighs and his wife work full-time, so leigh will need childcare services for Jack
otherwise he can’t get to the gym.
Leigh and his wife have family that are willing to support Leigh and encouragement him to meet his goals. However,
there are a couple of family members that don’t believe he can achieve his goals.
After chatting to Leigh, you have a feeling that he is an emotional eater, and when things become overwhelming, he

CAST STUDY - QUESTIONS:
A) In the space provided below, summarise Leigh’s belief systems/values and self-worth
Leigh is having a great belief system specifically he is the man with higher expectations which shows his ability
to turn out something bigger from himself. He had been the man with great fitness and sporty nature which is now
missing it is somehow making his belief lower. He is the man with higher values and self-worth. He is working
out for over 3 hours without taking rest.
Leigh is ready to lose his weight and work out more it shows that the man is having great self-worth. At the same
time as a father he is having great value, he is really devoted to his family and left enjoying and focusing on his
personal life.
B) In the space provided below, summarise Leigh’s goals and his expectations on himself with regards to his exercise
goals
As above discussed that Leigh is the man with greater self-worth and higher life value. He is having goal to be fit
and wants to lose around 20 kg weight in 8 weeks. Leigh is now going through sort of stress, so he expects that
with the aimed changes he would be able to come out of it. Leigh believes that working out more will cause him
better results. These beliefs is making him work out for 3 hours without taking rest. Sometimes he shows sort of
negative expectations such as he would not be able to make it, he is not having enough time etc. these negative
elements are affecting his performance in contrasting direction.
C) In the space provided below, discuss Leigh’s behaviour towards stress/anxiety, does he experience this and if so does
he have any coping techniques for stress/anxiety management
He is having very aggressive behavior towards stress and anxiety he is going through. The main reason might be
his past where he had been very fit and fine man. Now those characteristics are being missed which are making
him experience stress and anxiety. His work commitments are very intensive that's why he is not looking able to
manage stress. For eradication of stress and anxiety he wants to prove himself this is his only stress management
technique. He is putting severe efforts and with minimal diet, extensive work out he is striving to make himself
fit. Leigh is working out with great dedication, reducing his over eating habit, setting higher goals etc. these all
approaches can be labelled as coping techniques he is using at present.
D) In the space provided below, summarise the social support network around Leigh – Does he have a positive support
network or are his goals unsupported by those close to him?
Now Leigh is not going through good phase of his life. In such stressful circumstances there is need of a positive
social circle which can help the man to come out of stress and positively work upon his issues. His wife and other
family members are showing their inclination to Leigh they want him to perform his best going upon merits. But
at the same time there are some negative people too. There is a couple in family who believes that he would not be
able to achieve what he wants. So it can be concluded that there is good positive support but having some negative
people can not be avoided. He is having supportive family members, his wife and son are very positive about his
performance so it can be summarized that Leigh is having positive support network system.
E) In the space provided below, identify & discuss what ‘stage’ of readiness for change Leigh is currently at.
Leigh is now at may be at fourth stage. He made up his mind and started working too. When he decided to make
changes in his life, getting fit, working out etc. so it can be cited as first, second and third stages. Now he is
engaged in practice or work out too. Leigh is constantly giving over 3 hours restlessly. The man is giving his all to
ensure higher performance and wiping out all potential perils which are hindering his way. There are multiple
techniques to get motivated so with this regard, he is abiding with some of them such as-
Building better relationships.
Keeping sort of goals in mind.
Staying positive always.
Keeping high level of energy.
so on the basis of the above it would be fair to say that Leigh is striving better for his better health, it can be
seen in his practice and every day working out for around 3 hours without taking any rest.
For managing stress Leigh is keeping himself motivated where his family is supporting him to the fullest extend at
the same time his strong determination and high set goals are also making better way for the man.
there are mainly six stages for making changes in life. these stages are-
1. Pre-contemplation
2. Contemplation
3. Preparation
4. Action
5. Maintenance
6. Relapse

it can be said that Leigh is now existing on the 4 th stage since he has made a plan, then contemplated over that then got
prepared too. so now he is probably on the fourth stage and is also very close to cross the stages 5 th and 6th .
F) In the space provided below, identify and summarise any perceived barriers to exercise participation and adherence
that leigh night have
There are some perceived barriers to exercise participation and adherence. Leigh is an emotional eater and when
he feels bad he likes to eat more in order to come out of that sense of inferiority. This may hinder his way since he
is having need to be perseverate. He wants to get himself fit and fine which is only possible with great prudence.
At the same time, he is not practising with proper schedule, his efforts are cumbersome, being a man with higher
expectations he is striving to reduce his 20-25 kg weight in a few weeks. So such unrealisable objectives may
reduce his confidence level and may be ended up with poor participation.
He is having some self-doubts too. Such as he would not be able to make the task or the available time is not
sufficient etc. it may affect his participation in adverse way. He is now working out with hectic efforts so there is
high possibility to give up it due to irregularity.
