Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment presents a student's responses to a situational awareness worksheet designed for a perioperative clinical skills session in a nursing program. The student addresses questions related to the demonstration of situational awareness concepts during the practical session, providing specific examples of how these concepts were observed. The student reflects on the session's usefulness and offers feedback. The assignment also delves into scenarios involving medical errors, patient care, and the impact of environmental factors on patient health. The student analyzes situations where a lack of awareness led to adverse outcomes, such as medication errors, delayed medical attention, and overcrowding. The responses incorporate relevant references to support the analysis and demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of nursing practice in a variety of settings, including the operating room and hospital wards.

Qn 1
I wasn’t aware that the patient was not to be given the medicine that caused a reaction as the
information on his allergies and allergic reactions was not divulged.
I was so busy attending to the patient who had become nonresponsive that I didn’t realize that
the elderly lady at the corner of the room was bleeding and therefore needed immediate medical
attention.
We were convinced that the only way we were going to save the mother was through the
termination of the pregnancy which would result in the loss of the child.( Johansen, and O'brien,
2016).
We didn’t realize soon enough that the doctor who had initially operated on the patient had done
a wrong diagnosis and thus prescribed the wrong prescriptions for the patient.
I didn’t notice that none of the patient in the ward had been taken through their daily routine in
terms of being checked on their progress and for those who are ready to be processed for
dischargement.
We were very surprised when the patient started to develop complications as we had already
completed the surgical operation and given him the necessary dose that was supposed to help
him in the recovery process.( Lavoie, Cossette, and Pepin,2016).
Qn 2
The perception given was that of the overcrowding of people in the hospital space which could
lead to various incidents occurring that would affect them in terms of health. This occasioned the
collapsing of a certain lady due to the lack of fresh air circulating in the premises. This is a health

hazard when it comes to the environment and one that should be avoided at all cost.
( Berleant,2018.)
The lack of fresh air in the environment is a very critical issue as it denies someone the ability to
breathe properly and thus the individual may in the end collapses was with the case of the lady.
The individual was herself sick in the first place and since she wanted to be served like the rest,
she had to wait on the line which was very overcrowded leading to the loss of fresh air. The
meaning from this situation is that the body was denied enough circulation of oxygen to the brain
which normally controls all the functions of the body and thus it started to fail.
The chances of such an incident in the future happening is very high if the people would still
crowd themselves without allowing themselves the chance to take in air that is not contaminated.
Therefore future actions need to be taken promptly in order to prevent the situation rather than
treat it. People should avoid overcrowding in order to give themselves enough breathing air and
the hospitals should also ensure that the people going there to get services should be placed in a
conducive environment in order to avoid such happenings. Furthermore, there should be enough
ventilation in places where there a lot of people which will help in ensuring there is full
circulation of fresh air that is necessary for one to breathe properly. (Goldstein, and Brockmole,
2016).
