Part A
1. Dolores was developing self-realisation as it has been mentioned in the book authored by
DeVito et al. (2016) was actually influenced due to four different sources. Among those
four sources as they have been mentioned in textbook, self- concept of Dolores is mostly
influenced by Cultural Teachings as well as forms of Self- Evaluations since she started
to seek her journey associated with reconciliation as well as healing after she came to
know about her biological parents. Through the parents, teachers as well as media helps
to instil different values, beliefs as well as ethnicity in which a person is brought up since
her childhood. In this case Dolores was born to her Indian parents as it was told to her
Enoch Cree First Nation however she was in the Catholic family who used to live in
Calgary. The values of ethics as well as culture in which Dolores grew up was entirely
different from that of her and so she didn’t come to know the other half of her life.
2. Cultural sensitivity is basically an attitude in which people show their behaviour in order
to acknowledge various differences in culture. Sensitivity towards culture is basically
important for putting on efforts in order to maintain peace as well as economic growth
and this actually helps to facilitate cross- culture communication (Feng et al., 2016). Judy
told Dolores at the end of the case study as this would have been a sort of barrier for the
child to grow up in that kind of unhealthy environment and she would have been able to
reciprocate her true feelings as she would grow up as they would have been inconsiderate
to her. Here it has been found that ethnocentrism acts as a very big obstruction since
Dolores always takes into account status, culture and beliefs of her biological parents
more superior to that of her adopted parents as because she is not aware of the original
status of her parents.
3. Judy didn’t want to introduce indigenous culture when Dolores was growing up, this fact
can be explained by applying the theories on enculturation. This states that culture usually

comprises of most of the members in a particular group in a society and language, trends
of thinking, religion, laws or art are usually transferred among people from one
generation to the next generation. Through enculturation, a person actually forms an
ethnic identity that is it denotes a form of commitment towards various beliefs as well as
philosophies associated with culture. This would have actually harmed Dolores since her
parents were alcoholics, there might be a chance that she would have also adopted those
unhealthy habits. These would have further affected her concentration towards studies,
her entire process of growth since her childhood and for this she would have also suffered
a lot. Since she was brought up by the Catholic family, she grew up in a disciplined
environment and Judy kept away all these truth for these years as it would have mentally
impacted Dolores. Acculturation is generally referred to the culture of an individual
person that undergoes modification on being exposed to another culture. Suppose an
immigrant comes to a country that has different cultural traditions from his or her own
country, then that person gradually develop the culture and traditions of the host country.
He or she gradually adopts to new styles of food, new world and the environment.
Therefore Dolores, after she was adopted by Catholic family got accustomed to their
religion as well as beliefs and she became a part of their culture through those years.
4. As per the case study, it actually took Judy long time in order to deliver the information to
Dolores that she would be taken to meet her original mother Helen, who lives in
Edmonton and Judy would drive for Dolores. This was a crucial point of time when Judy
understood that she would not be able to hide away the secrets from Dolores anymore,
and therefore need to disclose the truth regarding her parents. Otherwise a feeling of
mistrust or betray would develop in between her and her adopted daughter. Interpersonal
communication plays a significant role since it helps a person to grow, learn as well as
receive influence from other people of different culture, this actually helps the person to

communicate using either gestures that is mainly non- verbal means of communication or
otherwise through verbal means. This type of communication is just like a form of
adjustment between the languages of that of parents to that of the children. Since Dolores
belonged to a different culture therefore Judy took long time to understand the child, her
feelings and emotions and she knew that if she had told the truth to her about her parents
at a very early age, then she might not be able to tackle the child. So instead of that, she
tried to make friends as Dolores started to grow up and finally one day she decided to tell
off her the truth.
Part B
1. There was a time when I had a bad experience while communicating with a person because
of certain barriers in culture as a result of which I developed weakness during intercultural
communication. I was involved in dealing with my project work at the university and he was
my team member (Jenifer & Raman, 2015). When our project leader told us to do a particular
task together, his ideas confronted with that of mine, due to this a sort of misunderstanding
developed since he felt that I was on the point of hurting him, his cultural sentiments in order
to prove my ideas as well as cultural customs superior to that of him. He took the entire thing
in a negative manner, and we also had very heated arguments. Finally the things came on our
favour, our team leader arranged things for us in such a manner so that both of us do not feel
neglected while working in the team, and our issues got resolved.
2. While communicating with the same person on another incident, it helped to create a
positive intercultural communication through application of certain incidents. Once there was
a community program organized by our university, and we were involved in serving the poor
people, the women and children in the local community to get them new cloth items,
delicious cooked food and some toy articles that were to be distributed among the children. I

once again came across this person who immediately announced that he would be ready to
involve if such items would be distributed irrespective of the caste, culture and traditions that
the entire community belongs to. So things happened according to his choice, my friends
including me started distributing the items without considering their caste or to which
religion they belong, and everything was distributed uniformly among those people. Families
were very happy at our initiatives and the person was highly praised for his positive ideas as
this helped in spreading equality in diversity through intercultural program. I was very happy
at that moment, we both forgot our past grudges and actively participated in this community
program. This incident helped to know about the societies and ways in which we all can bring
improvement to our processes of thinking gradually.
