1SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN SOCIAL SCIENCES
Topic: Reflection on my learning by identifying 3 skills that needs improvement and outline
of how I will improve them.
Developing one’s skill is necessary through their learning course. This helps us
becoming more able and competent as we progress, preparing us for our future career
(Jackson 2015). Through my learning course I have been trying to find out the problems that
I have been having that hinders my study efforts. Through self-analysis and discussion
with my family and peers I have learnt that the three aspects that I have deficiency are
speaking, writing and time management. These three skills are necessary for becoming
successful in academic career and professional career. I intend to develop these skills by
adopting the following methods.
In order to develop my speaking skills, I will first try to find a peer with whom I can
converse in English and who will be able to correct my mistakes. I might also join a language
club or volunteer in social work projects so that I am able to spend time with people who
speak the language. The best way to learn language is to listen and practice and through these
groups I will be able to do both (Lourdunathan and Menon 2017). Recording conversations
and listening to it later helps in understanding the mistakes. These can be later corrected to
become much more proficient at speaking. Watching movies and listening songs also helps in
developing the skills. Shadowing is another method that improves the speaking skills
exponentially. Shadowing allows one to imitate the speaking style of others. Shadowing my
other peers who are proficient at this, will help me overcome this deficiency.
Writing skills are necessary for becoming successful in life. In our academic life we
need it for writing papers and answers. Writing skills gives us the ability to present our
thought coherently and clearly (Fareed, Ashraf and Bilal 2016). To develop this skill, I will
first create a string foundation of grammar, vocabulary and spelling. This will give me the

resources that will actually help in writing better English. Practicing regularly is also
necessary. Any skill can be perfected only through regular practice. Working with a partner,
preferably the one I will have for my speaking development is effective. Reading more books
and literature helps in developing a style that is unique to everybody’s own. Writing with a
technique is also effective. While preparing a writing, I must first create a draft or outline that
will contain the thoughts or points so that I can develop them coherently. After writing,
revising, editing and proofreading also improves writing skills.
Time management is necessary for any academic and professional. In academic life,
we need to address many classes, topics and subjects. We need to distribute our time evenly
and according to difficulty. I lack this skills and often find myself in situations where I am
preparing my lessons at the last minute. For time management, creating a lesson plan and
schedule helps a lot (Ekaterine and Natalia 2017). In professional life too, creating daily
agenda, to-do lists and reminders help us manage the time effectively.
