INTRODUCTION
Small scale industries are the types of enterprise found in this period of
industrialisation. They have existence in every country and plays a important role in growth
and development of a countries economy. Meaning of the small scale industries might be
different in various countries depending upon the level and pattern of development. It can be
defined on the basis of the number of labour working in it, on the basis of turnover and the
capital. UK comes in the countries having maximum number of small scale enterprises and
these constitute a large percent in the country's economy (Bridge and O'Neill, 2012). SMEs
are normally privately owned and have a annual turnover of £1.8 trillion and still increasing
per year. These enterprise provides employment to the people in big number and also help
those countrymen who has lost their job and want to start their own business. Parliament have
to understand the importance of these start-up and provide them a business environment
where they can grow at faster rate. A consulting firm is a start-up up of individual or more
than one person who are expert at a particular field and give professional advice to an
organization who are paying for them. The consulting firm selected for the assignment is
“Hunter Adams” which is a small scale enterprise.
TASK 1
1.1 Profile of selected Small Business and its Strengths and Weaknesses.
Hunter Adams Limited is Aberdeen based consultancy firm of England and was
founded in June, 2011. Leigh Stott is the managing director of the enterprise and is a human
resource and management consultancy enterprise. They have currently eight employees
working with them and had £400,000 of revenues in the first 100 days.
Strengths:- Hunter Adams have 300 clients in over 20 different sectors of energy,
marine and other professional sector (Monk and Wagner, 2012). They provide a range of HR
services specialized in mergers integration, recruitment of the employees for the clients
according to their needs. In the initial stage they meet the clients and analyse their demands
and requirement regarding any HR services (McKenzie, 2015). In the short span of time they
have 4 main offices in North,Mid and South UK and also provide training sessions, events
and workshops.
Document Page
Weaknesses:- In the era where HR department plays an important role now a day
almost every industry or firm have their separate department for this, so this provides a
disadvantage for them. A large number of IT companies prevails in developed country like
UK but Hunter Adams does not provide HR consultancy for these companies as they have
less command over it.
1.2 Ways in which existing performance could be maintained and strengthened.
Clients of Hunter Adams heavily rely on them on the advice or the service they gives
so it becomes the prime duty of the consultancy firm to give the best results. In just 6 years
the company has shown a rapid growth in every section whether the turnover or in the
number of clients. Currently as the company is dealing with 300 clients in 20 different
sectors. It should not stop at these numbers and try to get more and more clients and getting a
client means more profit (Burns, 2010). They have to make their presence at every place by
promoting their services they provide. It could organise social or corporate events like
conducting seminars, lectures, concert, training and they could popularize them through the
help of advertisement on TV, radio, newspapers, pamphlets, billboards and sponsoring big
events. International clients adds more value to the firm so they should focus on expanding
their services in foreign countries. Use of social media can be the best way to mark the
presence of their facility they supply. More clients brings more burden so increase in the
number of employees and offices would be the best idea (Acevedo and Tan, 2011). Hunter
Adams should look every aspects of the company they are partnering to and should provide
best from the budget allocated because there might clients who don't have much revenues to
invest. Taking HR services at different level and setting up a competition for the other
consultancy firm can be the motto of it.
M1.
Government departments working style is normally different from the private as there
are lots of mediators and decision making body. So the consultancy firm can provide services
related to the HR which will define the way any work can be carried out. Recruitment of the
employees will be done by Hunter Adams because they will try to find the best suitable
person for that work.

TASK 2
2.1 Appropriate actions to overcome the identified weaknesses.
Every company has weaknesses and can improve those through implementing
effective ideas and techniques. But if weaknesses are overlooked and not paid attention on
them they could create disaster and this will lead to failure of the business. Most of the small
scale businesses don't survive much only few who has looked after every aspects of the
weaknesses they have been existing today. As mentioned above it does not provide any
services to the clients who are from IT sector (Malhotra and Temponi, 2010). 21st century is
the period where technology has taken over everyday life of each individual so there is
booming in the IT sector. Lots of companies are making their mark in this sector from
a small sector to a large sector. Tons of job opportunities are there so it becomes difficult for
those organisation to recruit a suitable employees or the other thing is that they don't have
time for this purpose as they have lot of burden for this. Looking at the scenario Hunter
Adams needs to at fast and start their services in this sector otherwise they will be left behind
from their competitors. Recruit some technology and IT market expert who have deep
knowledge and understanding about this sector. They should make a list of the departments
which are on rising and should give consultancy to those companies.
2.2 Ways in which existing performance could be maintained and strengthened.
Human resource consulting services contribute 10 percent of the UK's consulting
firms, so this statics show that it does not cover much of the market (Altman, Sabato and
Wilson, 2010). Growth chances of any firm making its debut in this sector will be in profit as
there is no such competitions. Hunter Adams can be said as the settled company in the
business of consultancy. It has to decide its goals and services for the future that after five
years from now where they see themselves. To create dominance in the market they have to
regularly come out with the new and innovations ideas and plans because at time comes when
every idea fails or gets outdated as the time progress. Expanding the business abroad in
foreign country have to on the list of priorities and whenever they gets clients in particular
nation they should work according to that environment which include the organisation
working style, culture, employment benefits, motivation of staff. Whenever a client comes for
any consultancy he comes with a hope that they will be treated properly and the consultancy
Document Page
firm will solve all their demands and would give them best results. Before giving any advices
or providing services they should examine and inspect all the areas of the client.
2.3 Areas in which the business can be expanded.
Small business companies expands and comes in the category of the big business
companies but that takes times and for that a constant and rapid growth is needed. Hunter
Adams has specialization in providing the HR services. HR services has various functional
areas like staffing, human resource development, safety and health, employee and labour
relation. It has full fledge control over these and know how to satisfy the client. As a
consulting firm it should not restrict or limit itself to only HR services (Teece, 2010). It
should expand their services in segments like technology, operations, financial advisory,
management and strategy. It is seen that normally consulting firms are freelancers or small
sized, a very few companies as emerged as the large firms. Government is giving subsidy and
providing compensate to these small businesses and the market size is also increasing. Not
everybody knows where to invest or what to do and at that particular time they need these
consultancy services. But when they find that there is no consultancy firm exists in the
market who could guide them or work for them that leads to loss. Improving the present
services or changing their way will defiantly brings positive outputs. Through this they could
expand in any sector of their choices.
M2.
The consulting firm meets with the small scale enterprise and try to explain them the
certain scenario in the small scale business market. Government has spent £11.4 billion
with small and medium sized businesses to the companies who has 250
or less employees. Government has provided with the certain budget for specific
business (Jones and Iredale, 2010). Aim of the firm is to make client aware about the
parliament schemes from which they can be benefited.
TASK 3
3.1 Produce an assessment of existing business objectives and plans.
Company has a business plan which they follows and according to it they make their
targets and strategies. It all depends upon the business plan which decided that will your
organization or business will succeed. In his business plan it has what the company will sell
Document Page
or what services it will provide. It gives services to the clients in HR sector only, invest on
the idea of renovation of a organisation by taking several steps. The reason for the business
plan is that you are responsible for the company need and projects. Current business plan is
focusing on one particular sector through giving them services (Brinckmann, Grichnik and
Kapsa, 2010). To provide quality services or to satisfy all the needs of the client the firm
follows a strategy and this includes the assigning the work to the concerned department. For
example; clients who wants the consultancy firm to recruit the employees for them will be
ask to go to that particular section for this. Clients who wants that the firm should train their
employees will go to the concerned authority. So the consultancy firm has sub divided its
services and made departments who will be handling different issues or services.
3.2 Revise business plan to incorporate appropriate changes.
Every business plan need to be changed or revised at some time but the question is
when to update it or when changes should be done. Some companies change business plan
every month, quarterly or yearly. Whenever there is a scope of change they should think over
it. Changes are based on the research and survey of the different factors, they should look at
the clients list to which they has catered in the past. Review that company by looking at the
process or development which came after they taken your services and if there you find a
drastic change than look at the strategy you adopted for them. Ask all your client what they
want and what problem they face in working with them because hiding weaknesses will make
your firm's image down (Casadesus-Masanell and Ricart, 2010). Will include other services
like serving IT companies which till now was not in the business plan and expanding
approach other than human resource services. Giving the clients more services for a longer
duration of period and telling them every aspects of their company. Monthly review of the
performance of the employees and giving them the tasks and promoting or motivating them
to do that work in the given time. Debuting in the other countries, much more participation
and involvement on the social networking sites. Will put more focus on the advertisement
and promotion of the company.
3.3 Prepare an action plan to implement the changes.
Review or changes of the business plan has been discussed on the paper but how it
will be implemented is the main core issue. A action plan is made for this process and all the
plan will be sorted out step by steps according to the changes discussed above. To know the

performance of the clients and employees, a separate body of 5 people will be formed. Out of
those two will study the performance of the employees and other three will be assigned with
the role of knowing the developments taking place to client. Hiring some IT experts through
the market research method and asking them to prepare a project which could attract IT
companies to them (McGrath, 2010). For promotion of the services contacting the local
newspapers and radio, sponsoring sports events and giving advertisement to the business
channels. Admitting a social media expert who could run the firms accounts on Facebook,
twitter and blogging sites. He will be provided with the work of analysing the social media
market and make people engaged or make them active on the pages of the Hunter Adams. In
the business plan setting up the business to the other countries was also listed so they should
check the laws related to the business and make strategy according to it.
M3.
Changes made to the business plan is a very delicate process and is done with the full
planning because a irrelevant change or step could lead to a heavy loss and through this they
can lose a precious client. By taking technical things in mind every proposed plan should be
considered because a level can come where technical issues may arise.
TASK 4
4.1 Impact of the proposed changes on the business and its personnel.
Any changes made in the business plan will have impact on the organization and it is
not important that the changes made are accepted by everybody as for some it may be
suitable and for some it is not. Alter or review in that has brought new opportunities for the
Hunter Adams and its employees (Fayolle and Liñán, 2014). The working style has been
changed and now the work is with more efficiency, it has made them flexible in handling any
kind of client and its demand and requirements. Now the new innovation are encouraged
from everyone whether they are part of the company or not. It has brought a positive attitude
in the organization and boosted their moral. Now the communication gap has been reduced
between the clients and the firm, now the clients can reach or communicate to the
organization easily through the social media and other through other helpline. It has
developed a trust and credibility in the minds of the clients for the consultancy firm and they
know if their work is handled or given to this firm then it is in right hands and they will get
Document Page
best results. Client satisfaction is the biggest impact of the change in the business plan. They
have started getting foreign clients although and now deal with them through personally or
through online forums.
D1.
Change occurring need to be checked because change does not mean that it will
always go right or will be in the favour of the organization. It should have some value
attached to it and uneven change will not be successful at any cost. Manger had a duty to go
through the changes and make them realistic at the ground level (DaSilva and Trkman, 2014).
4.2Plan how the changes will be managed in the business.
Managing any situation is the role of the managers of the business and through his
skills he manages all the work. Changes has occurred or are in the line to be implemented so
here the job or role of the managers starts. He has to manage various things like the funds
allocated for the changes, coordination in the different departments, teams, resources to be
used in the process and how the changes could impact the performance of the work
(Belleflamme, Lambert and Schwienbacher, 2014). Dealing and managing all this will be a
crucial task because proper implementation is too be done. If any changes fails or does not
happens because of some issue the manager will be responsible for this, he will be liable for
everything whether good or bad. There might be a change in which more budget is required
than the predicted budget so to get over this situation he has to contact the banks they are
linked with or the investors on which they rely. Any client should not get away by the
changes his approval is must before any action. He need to be informed at every step.
D2.
A great leader or manger is recognized through his initiative he takes. He should not
depend upon anyone and should take changes and tasks through his own presence of mind.
Trying to managing the changes independently will boost up the confidence and will yield
positive results.
4.3Monitor improvement in the performance of the business over a given timescale.
Performance of the firm has shown a rapid increased and are also showing healthy
signs presently. A tenure of 6 month has been taken to review the performance of the Hunter
Adams after the changes was implemented (Botha and Robertson, 2014). Goals and targets
Document Page
was set for this period to measure the improvement and as predicted results were even. The
growth rate increased by a healthy margin percent. Earlier in the initial months of the changes
no foreign clients attracted to them but as it is told every changes needs time to show his
impact. Firm is receiving requests from the foreign clients to handle their operation and out of
them all one client is also an IT company of the neighbouring country of UK. Improvement
can be easily measured through the social networking sites, people are writing about the firm
in the from of reviews, use of company's name hashtags, posts including pictures and
comments related to it and their services (Stark, 2015). Facebook insights are showing the
growth this means that the company is reaching to the people at faster rate than the previous
rate.
D3.
Decisions whether small or big affects the organisation, so to make sure the decision
is effective it should have convergent, lateral and creative thinking involved in it. Every day
new ideas generate but if those ideas are not in the form of innovation it is of no use
(Rosemann and vom Brocke, 2015). If the change is different or out of the box and creative
thinking is involved in it for future purpose than it will definitely will be productive.
CONCLUSION
This is to conclude that above written report deals with the effectiveness of the change
in small scale businesses and how it can take help of the consulting firm Hunter Adams in
growing their business. Other than this strength and weakness of the firm was mentioned and
how it is growing its business.
