Smart Liveable Cities
The discussion is focused to introduce the Smart Liveable Cities concept with the help of
illustrative examples in relation to engineering infrastructures. While exploring the real-life
examples of smart cities in order to explore how global cities can be transitioned into the near
future, engineering infrastructures like liveability, water, energy, and transport will be taken
into main consideration. To do so, this discussion is focused on the chosen smart city such as
Newcastle, which is a port city of the popular Australian state New South Wales (NSW)
(Miller, 2017).
Here, the main engineering infrastructure smart examples for the following engineering
infrastructure fields will be provided:
Transport
Energy
Liveability
Water
Improved Transport in City of Newcastle
In the field of improved smart city transport of Newcastle, an engineering infrastructure smart
example is a driverless public shuttle. Recently, City of Newcastle has welcomed the arrival
of their first driverless vehicle. This driverless vehicle has a total capacity of 11 persons and
met the entire national and local legislation as well as regulations for ensuring it met all
safety standards. This vehicle is fully automated however one can stop the driverless vehicle
through an override system whenever required.
I believe that this driverless public shuttle is an example of smart transport in the city of
Newcastle because of the following reasons:
This smart vehicle’s in-built sensing and computer systems are capable of detecting
hurdles and obstacles effectively.
This vehicle is capable to anticipate movements and thereby evaluate the risk of
collision to another vehicle or any other object.
Finally, the chosen example of smart transport in Newcastle is capable to mitigate the
risks associated with those of human-controlled vehicles.
