Abstract
IoT is defined as the internet of things that offer a connection between thing and
communication. IoT is many things for many people, a network of devices and home appliances.
Term thing means it could be a person. There are many applications of IoT such as smart traffic,
smart home, automation, automatic home appliance system and industrial monitoring. IoT is an
advanced technology and it is increasing rapidly in the worldwide in last few years (Centenaro,
Vangelista, Zanella, & Zorzi, 2016). IoT changed the way of communication and it developed
many cities which are called smart cities. There are many applications of the internet of thing in
smart cities such as monitoring and controlling of health care systems, in defense, monitoring of
transports systems and in a communication system. The main objective of this research paper is
to describe the role of the internet of thing in smart cities and how this advanced technology
change the way of communication (Gaur, Scotney, Parr, & McClean, 2015). In this modern
generation, large numbers of individuals are moving into urban cities because IoT is the modern
technology which changed the way of communication. Smart cities provide a platform to manage
many components such as health and social care programs, transports systems, energy homes,
building, and environment. This paper is explaining the role of IoT in smart cities, various
applications of smart cities, their advantages, and disadvantages. The main advantage of this
technology is security that means this modern technology is very secured rather than other
technologies and it is estimated that in 2030 around 60% of people will adopt this technology
and also move towards the smart cities. In past few years, it is very complex to combine digital
technology with internet but IoT is an advanced technology which provides a communication

path between digital devices and internet (Memos, Psannis, Ishibashi, Kim, & Gupta, 2018).
There are many authors that researched on this topic and they observed that IoT is the modern
technology which improves efficiency and productivity of any organization and business. There
are many advantages of this technology is smart cities such as more efficient, more secure,
improve transportation systems, improve the way of communication, increased public safety, and
reduce time consumption. There are few problems occur in IoT smart cities such as power
consumption, required more wired cables, it produces more security risks, and complex to
design. The purpose of this paper is to describe different types of problem occur in smart cities
and also explain prevention methods. IoT completed based on sensors and devices which
required more power energy There are few examples of smart cities such as automatic parking
system, Smartphone detection, traffic congestion, waste management, and smart lighting
(Sanchez, Muñoz, Galache, Sotres, Santana, Gutierrez, & Pfisterer, 2014). These all thing was
done by one technology which is the internet of thing and this technology improved
communication systems in urban areas. This paper is explaining the concept of smart cities and
the role of IoT in smart cities.
