1SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES
Smoking is becoming one of the most common habits of the human beings and it is
generally seen that the majority of the people use it for relaxation purposes (Coletti et al. 41:
1256-1265). However, in the present times a critical debate has ensued whether smoking
should be prohibited in public places or not. This essay will discuss the fact that smoking
should be banned in public places since it adversely affects not only the health of the people
but at the same time society as well.
The act of smoking affects not only the individual health of the person who is
smoking but at the same time the health of the people who are in near vicinity. Passive
smoking has become one of the major issues which the people are facing at the current
moment. Studies have shown that passive smoking is as dangerous as active smoking and the
individuals involved in the process are susceptible to the same kinds of health hazards as the
active smokers (Coletti et al. 41: 1256-1265). This is generally considered to be one of the
main reasons why health care professionals are arguing for the fact that smoking should be
banned in public places.
Human beings learn best by observing the behavior of the other individuals and it is
generally seen that the inquisitive nature of the human beings encourages them to try out new
things. Coletti et al. are of the viewpoint that if smoking is allowed in public places then it
might appeal to the inquisitive nature of others and in a way would encourage others as well
to indulge in same activity. Therefore, these experts are of the opinion that smoking should
be banned in public places.
Many experts are of the opinion that smoking just like the other actions is a personal
choice of the individuals and therefore prohibiting it would mean infringing on the rights of
the people who smoke (Burns et al. 98: 78-86). However, when the negative aspects of

smoking are taken into consideration it would become apparent that it should be prohibited or
at best prohibited in public places.
To conclude, smoking in public places should be prohibited because of the damage
which it does not only to the person who is smoking but also to the people who are nearby.
This particular action is likely to make the society a much better place in terms of health to
dwell in.
