Social Entrepreneurship
The topic I have chosen is the role of social entrepreneurship in community development.
Social entrepreneurship in the field of management and business is a relatively new term.
However, it is evident from various research studies that the concept of social entrepreneurship
has existed for a long time in society. The aim of studying the topic will be to understand the role
of social entrepreneurship in community development projects. The subject also looks at how
social entrepreneurship is linked with community development agenda. The idea is to understand
the role that social entrepreneurship plays in addressing the different needs of the community.
The subject of social entrepreneurship is closely linked to social community development
in that the two aim at making the society better. In the concept of social entrepreneurship,
entrepreneurs often identify gaps in the market and work towards ensuring that they have
addressed some of the societal challenges that affect society (Dacin, Dacin & Matear, 2010).
This way they contribute towards community development through their ideas. They also benefit
from the same in the sense that being an example of an entrepreneurship activity, the social
entrepreneurs are business minded individuals who identify problems they can provide solutions
for in society (Dees, 2017). Therefore, in my view, the topic of social entrepreneurship and its
role in community development covers a rather broad spectrum. It is the case because besides
developing the community by addressing various social issues that affect the community, social
entrepreneurs also create employment opportunities for themselves and in some instances for
other people as well. This is the greatest motivation behind researching more about the topic.
I also chose the topic because in the future I would also like to work as a social
entrepreneur as that would not only give me an opportunity to serve my community but would

also provide me with the chance to help my community while at the same time benefiting
economically from the same.
Social entrepreneurship is closely related to several disciplines among them community
development and social studies. Others include economics and politics. It is the case because
social entrepreneurship is people-oriented and in most cases focuses on how best to solve
different societal challenges (Dacin, Dacin & Matear, 2010). These issues are also addressed by
disciplines such as politics, economics, and community development. They are critical issues in
the society, which means that they are part and parcel of the political decisions, which are made
by the community leaders. The study of these disciplines is likely to equip a social entrepreneur
with an in-depth understanding of the issues that affect his or her community (Dacin, Dacin &
Tracey, 2011). The same subjects are likely to offer the entrepreneur some solutions to the
problems identified initially. As such, it is evident that social entrepreneurship is closely related
to the subjects mentioned earlier.
Finally, the topic of social entrepreneurship is essential as it is one of the new concepts in
business management, which brings about a new idea as to how best social problems can be
addressed. It also tends to connect two disciplines, which were initially thought to be worlds
apart. These are the disciplines of entrepreneurship and social studies (Santos, 2012). This makes
it both unique and interesting to study as a subject area in the field of management.
