Part 1
Overview of Daffodil Day
Daffodil Day since its inception from 1990 has worked as the biggest organization raising
funds and also in generating awareness regarding the spread of Cancer in New Zealand. It
encourages individuals and groups to render donations to the New Zealand based Cancer
Society for conducting research and also rendering treatment to different types of Cancer.
Further, donations and needed support is also welcomed by Daffodil Day for cultivating
potential awareness and also regarding the development of programs and campaigns for
generating needed information about Cancer to people pertaining to different regions in New
Zealand(Daffodil Day, 2017).
Activities Performed at Daffodil Day
I served as a volunteer in Daffodil Day and my work was to collect donations from people
from Mt. Eden Road based in Auckland. The volunteering activity was carried out for a
period of five hours that encompassed different types of sub-activities underlined as follows.
Firstly, I was required to put up finely textured yellow colored clothes and hats resembling
daffodils. Secondly, I met with my team members and also with the volunteering leader of
my group. The leader briefed us with our objective for fund raising and how the money is
used for charity works in Daffodil Day. The shift started where we walked along the Mt.
Eden Road selling daffodils in neatly tied packs and other merchandises in exchange for
money or donations. We were told to render a smiling face to the people that would visit us
for procuring merchandises in exchange for donations. Photographs were also taken during
such volunteering meets and circulated along the social media(Daffodil Day, 2017).
Personal Means found Valuable during Volunteering
The volunteering activity conducted for Daffodil Day helped me in earning different valuable
means which otherwise would not have been available. The volunteering activity helped me
in promoting a difference in the lives of individuals suffering from Cancer. It also helped me
in rendering effective services to the society through generation of needed awareness and
financial support for fighting cancer. Further, effective understanding was earned regarding

my potential and hidden talents that contributed in enhancement of self confidence. Similarly,
in terms of operating with non-government and non-profit organisations needed knowledge
was earned regarding the functions and the operational parameters of the government. Other
than knowledge, the sense of empathizing with the needs and expectations of the cancer
patients further contributed in caring and addressing the needs of diverse
communities(American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), 2015).
Identification and description of Gaps in Personal Means
As a part of the volunteering activity concerning working with Daffodil Day, I rightly
identified potential gaps associated with reflection of leadership skills and also experience of
working in a team or group environment. I identified my failure in effectively leading a team
of volunteers for meeting of group objectives and targets concerning collection of donations
for supporting cancer patients. The need for effective communication and motivation were
clearly identified owing to gaps regarding communication of objectives, leadership skills and
also the manner of motivating individuals involved in groups to meet collection targets.
Difficulty division of tasks and targets based on individual and group potential and also based
on assessing the regional potential were also identified.
Insights for Creation of Future Social Value
Effective insights regarding the creation of future social value for the Cancer patients based
in New Zealand are outlined as under:
-Generation of coaching and training to the Cancer patients for bringing about changes in
their existing lifestyle
-Collection and generation of feedback rendered by Cancer patients along different hospitals
-Generation of needed peer support and also rendering financial and community support to
the families and other care groups for the Cancer patients for enhancement of wellbeing of
the patients(Cancer Council NSW , 2015).
