1GEOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT
As the entire world is focusing on climate change, increasing temperature of earth, and
saving endangered animal species, deforestation has become an alarming situation for the entire
world 9 Corry, 2015). As per Goudie (2018), there are three primary effects of deforestation due
to which humankind is suffering or would be suffering in future such as social impact, economic
and ecological impact. This paper would discuss the social impact of the phenomenon in brief.
It is known that scientists have discovered medicinal properties in only 1% of the total
plants present in the rainforest area that helps to produce 25% of the entire pharmaceutical for
the western world (Ndam et al., 2014). However, due to deforestation, as per Berlin (2014), 137
species are becoming extinct every day. Therefore, the possibility of social benefit through
pharmacological benefits are decreasing every day (Ndam et al., 2014). Besides that, there are
several indigenous tribes, bushman tribes such as Saan tribes that live in the forests, grass land
and rainforests and destroying their natural habitat that is forest would destroy their social
structure and impact their survival. It is also seen that due to deforestation and destruction of the
livelihood of the tribes living in rainforest, the communities living become prone to extinction
(Corry, 2015). Further, deforestation could affect the balance between human and nature and
could lead to several natural calamities that has the ability to destroy the social structure and
increase poverty level in the communities. Moreover, social impact of deforestation is associated
to economy, ecology and environment as they collectively help to build a healthy society (Austin
et al., 2017).
