Introduction:
Learning theories are important theoretical construct to assess and interpret human
behavior and learning process. This paper specifically discusses the importance of social learning
theory in the process of assessment, intervention and evaluation of client. It also provided insight
in to the application of social learning theory in social work practice and its strengths in
comparison to other learning theories.
Role of social learning theory in the process of assessment, intervention and evaluation:
The social learning theory proposed by Bandura states that the learning process in an
individual occurs by means of observation, imitation and modeling. This implies that people
learn by observing others, forms idea of the new behavior and using the coded information as a
guide for future actions (Thomas & Simpson, 2014). Hence, the concept is similar to cognitive
and behavioral learning theory, however it also adds environmental influences in the learning
process. The social learning theory has found application in educational organization, workplace
and health care setting for assessment and evaluation of clients. Social workers find challenges in
understanding complex behavior of clients and social learning theory has guided them in the
assessment of client. They can use the core concepts of the theory to assess client and find out
the factors responsible for behavioral conflict in client. The analysis of mediational process of
attention, retention, reproduction and motivation can help to understand the factors that create
behavioral issues for client (Corey, 2015). Hence, counselors or social workers who deal with
school students or people struggling with mental illness can implement effective interventions
for them.

The use of social learning theory also helps counselors to determine the most effective
intervention suitable for patient. By employing social learning theory, they conduct
comprehensive interview with client to identify the role model and exposure to environmental
stimuli that reinforces negative and disruptive behavior in people. Hence, the theory is useful in
assessing patterns of dysfunctional thoughts and choosing intervention for them accordingly. It
has also found application in designing interventions (Maddux, 2013). For example, parenting
programs for school children has applied social learning theory to design parenting intervention
and promote care giving in young children. A RCT study used social learning theory to code
parent behavior and incorporated it in parenting interventions to enhance the quality of parent-
child relationship (O'Connor et al., 2013).
Importance of social learning theory in social work practice:
The social learning theory will be a very useful resource to guide me during my social
work practice. It will inform my practice work because it has addressed the core limitation found
in behavioral theories. The theoretical concept can give me the idea of ways to identify the
methods people employ to model the behavior they observe around them and use the information
to correct dysfunctional thought pattern in client. Grounding my practice with this theory will
also be critical in resolving complex issues in my work. Orienting theories during session with
client will help me to understand the source of behavioral problem in client and use appropriate
practice models as a source to improve outcome for clients. While the social learning theory
enables social workers to understand the process by which cognitive structures enables
adaptation of specific behavior in client, the next procedure of changing the behavior also
becomes easier for social workers by modifying the reinforcement (Teater, 2014). Hence, initial
process of assessment and evaluation can inform social workers like me regarding the reason for

problem in client. In addition, use of appropriate practice model will enable reducing immediate
crisis and solving problem of client. This will be a valuable resource to engage in competitive
social work practice
Comparison of social learning theory with two other theories:
The social learning theory is a model that explains human behavior by means of
observation, retention and modeling of the behavior. Just like social learning theories, there are
many other theories too that explains human behavior. Other two important learning theories to
study human behavior include the behavioral theory and the psychodynamic theory. Each of
these theories has specific assumptions to interpret human behavior and each have their own
strength and weakness. For instance, the behavioral theory emphasized the role of environment
in affecting behavior of people. According to behaviorist approach, people learned new behavior
either by classical or operant conditioning. The classical conditioning is mainly defined that
learning process occurs in response to stimuli, whereas Skinner’s operant conditioning gives the
idea that people’s behavior can be changes on the basis of positive or negative reinforcement.
Hence, observable traits are the main focus of behaviorist theory and it ignores internal events
such as cognition or emotions behind the behavior of a person (McSweeney & Murphy, 2014).
The strength of the behavior theory is that supports learning through observation. Hence,
according to this concept, it is easier to collect relevant data from client and understand the cause
of certain behavior. Another strength is that it facilitates changing maladaptive behavior in
clients by means of the values of reinforcement. Despite this strength, the behaviorism approach
is criticized because it is one-dimensional and does not consider internal influences such as
thought and feelings which affect behavior. Hence, this may create challenges in social work

practice. Due to this limitation, the social learning theory is regarded as the best for practice
because it overcomes this limitation and considers people’s behavior and attitude too apart from
environmental and behavioral influence (Wo, Ambrose, & Schminke, 2015). Therefore, this
theory can provide great flexibility to understand difference in behavior of client.
The psychodynamic theory is another theory that studies human behavior and the core
advantage of this is that it considers both nature and nurture element. It explores the unconscious
mind apart from consciousness to identifying the driving force behind human behavior
(Colarusso & Nemiroff, 2013). . Although this theory overcomes the weakness of cognitive and
behavioral theory, however the core limitation is that it ignores the meditational process
associated with human behavior. This part is again corrected and properly explained by social
learning theory as it explains the meditational process by which behavior is changed. Bandura
has clearly explained the factor of attention, retention, reproduction and motivation behind an
action (Wo, Ambrose, & Schminke, 2015). Therefore, the social learning approach takes thought
process into account while assessing behavior of client and this may support social workers to
understand complex behaviors of client. Hence, social learning theory is the most suitable theory
for practice in social work.
Conclusion:
The paper summarized the importance of social learning theory for assessment of client
behavior. From the analysis of the core concept of the theory, it can be concluded that social
learning theory is beneficial as it overcomes the limitation and bridges the gap found in cognitive
and behavioral theories. The uniqueness of this theory is that it considers environmental,
behavioral as well as cognitive influences and the focus on identifying the thought process will
