Social learning theory
The model chosen is Bandura’s social learning theory. This theory explains that
human beings gain skills from other human beings. New skills are learnt through observation,
imitation and modelling. An individual can also obtain social skills by observing the
emotions, behaviours and attitudes of other people in the same environment. The social
learning theory has often been viewed as connecting the cognitive theory and the behaviourist
learning theory as it covers the attention of the individual, memory, and their motivation. The
philosopher behind this theory, Albert Bandura, agrees that the social learning theory
supports the operant theory and the classic conditioning theory (Bandura, 2018).
Bandura’s social learning theory can be implemented in the primary care speciality.
An example is in mothers coping with post partum depression. The social learning theory can
be used when the mother is in support groups. In these groups, she will be able to assess the
situation around her, and see how other mothers who are in a similar situation are coping. She
will then undergo a counselling sessions and the various skills will be imparted. Finally,
using the social learning theory, the mother will be able to overcome the post partum
depression ( Suarez, 2019).
In conclusion, evidence based research has shown that Bandura’s social learning
theory can be implemented in various patient care problems. By observing other individuals
undergoing a similar situation, the patient is able to gain the required skills to overcome the
problem (Akers, & Jennings, 2019).
