The growth in digitalization has made Social media as interesting part of the
contemporary era and has certainly become part of daily life. However, today for celebrities it is
accused to have negative impact (Warren, Sulaiman & Jaafar, 2014). The paper aims to argue
that social media hurts celebrities since it leaves no space to them and promotes lack of privacy
along with cyber bullying and spread of wrong information.
People were completely out of touch before the era of social media regarding celebrities
and their life. It was only through media general population would get information about
celebrities’ whereabouts. However with the social media, general population gets to know about
their favorite celebrities (Fardouly, Pinkus & Vartanian, 2017). Social media gives the
opportunity of directly communicating with celebrities. The opportunity has begun spreading
negative impact as well. Fans are fanatic about their favorite celebrity, therefore they wish to
know inside and out of the celebrity’s life. However they fail to realize that it hurts celebrities as
it promotes a lack of privacy, spread negative information and encourage cyber bullying (Chung
& Cho, 2017).
It is important to see the other side of the issue as well where the picture is entirely
different. Social media allows the celebrities to communicate directly with their fans. It gives
them the opportunity to promote their upcoming events, movies and music albums. It helps them
spreading their work globally (Jin & Phua, 2014).
Therefore, it can be concluded that social media has both positive as well as negative
impact on celebrities’ life. However in the recent decades the negative impacts seems to rise
uncontrollably.
