Outlining the aims and objectives of the research study
Research Aim
To identify the impact of social media on the academic performance of students.
Research Objectives
To understand the use of social media for academic purposes
To identify the adverse effects of social media on the academic performance of students
Research Questions
How does social media affects the academic performance of students?
Indicating why the research is valid and of interest
The existing investigation is of great interest interest because it carries out in-depth
information about the impacts of social media on the academic performance of the students
(Talaue and et. al., 2018). This research is valid because it covers the topic which holds great
importance in the current world. Social media channels are used by people of every generation
because now everyone has smartphones (Abbas and et. al., 2019). Some people use these social
media channels for connecting with different people and some use for their educational purposes.
Social media has become one of the fastest routes to communicate and share information which
have also helped in reshaping the system of education.
The current study is of great interest to me because through this I will learn about the
positive and negative use of the social media channels. I will learn about how much time a
student should spend on social media so that it does not negatively impact academic
performance. I will also learn about the health issues caused by increasing the screen time. Thus,
this report covers the two opinions which include positive as well as negative side of the social
media channels.
Including selective and critical assessment of relevant literature
In today's world communication holds great importance. This has increased the usage of
social media channels for connecting with large number of people. The fastest way to share
information, connect with people etc. is social media (Chukwuere, 2021). There are different
channels of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc. which are
generally used by teenagers for connecting with friends, building personalities and creating

social life. These channels also assist college students to deal with daily chores and their
educational purposes (Saha and Guha, 2019). There is always an argument in relation the
advantages and disadvantages of using social media channels by students because some believe
that these channels negatively affect the mental health of students and on the other hand, some
believe that these channels of social media are helping students to learn about new things.
Social media refers to an innovative technique for enhancing the education by creating
environment of collaborative learning in universities, educational institutions and universities.
The educational universities and institutions have experienced in communication between
teachers and students (Asare-Donkoh, 2018). Social media channels have minimised the gap
between instructors and students because students can easily make formal and informal
communication with tutors and teachers. On the other hand, it is determined that students have
started spending large span of time on different channels of social media (Mim, Islam and
Kumar, 2018). Hence, this ultimately distracts students from important areas such as reading,
studying, doing work and making constructive communications.
