TION

The term ethnicity is more difficult to define because it
cannot be defined with the help of physical cues. The term
ethnicity is defined through shared collective cultures which
include several elements and some of these are language,
literature, norms, religion, practices, customs and also
history. The reason behind the development of these groups
is that unique social experience and history which becomes
a base of the group's ethnic identity. In the social world, the
word ethnicity is defined as a common culture and way of

life (Stone, 2018). The examples which denote the ethnicity
in the social world are the cultural products, language,
cuisine, art, music and many more. It can be a source of
social conflict as well as social unity. The world includes
thousands of several ethnic groups which can be the largest
ethnic group i.e. Han Chinese and also the smallest
indigenous groups which only consist of few people. But all
these groups has its history, culture, religion, etc. which
makes it different from other social groups and further, the
members get distinct but common identity.
Ethnicity is not a biological trait but members must have
those unique traits to getting membership of that particular
group. Therefore, it can be said that cultural elements
should be taught but not inherited.

All ethnic groups do not follow the same structure to define
their ethnicity. While some group puts more emphasis on
defining ethnicity through common language while other
groups prefer to define their ethnicity through common
religious identity. This can be explained by taking an
example. For instance, one of the ethnic groups i.e. French
Canadians focuses on language. They use this medium to
connect with the French colonists. They are the first who
settled in Canada in the 1600s and they use it to
differentiate themselves from Scottish Canadians, Irish
Canadians as well as English Canadians. The other ethnic
element which does not use to distinguish it, other people, is
a religion because some of the Canadians are Christians,
Protestant and some are Catholic.
On the contrary to this, the ethnic group of Jews does not
use a common language to differentiate themselves. This is
because across the world they use different languages such
as Yiddish, Judeo-Arabic, Hebrew, Ladino and many others.

The term health can be defined as the individual’s social,
mental and physical wellbeing. This term is defined by the
World Health Organization and in addition to this, this
organization also say that it is very complex to define the
term health because it does not include physical wellbeing
but it also includes individual’s state of mind the social
environment in which the person lives. In order to
understand the concept of health in the context of the social
world, this means that there is a contract between health
and society. The main objective of understanding the social
world in the context of health is to know how social life
affects the mortality rate and morbidity rate of an individual
(World Health Organization, 2016).
It is very difficult to accept the fact that social culture also
affects the health of an individual. The general physician
views the disease as a medical problem and gives treatment
individually. But several public health scholars and
sociologists observe the frequency of people falling ill belong
to a particular society. In the social world, it is found that the
culture of society affects the health and illness of the people.
Further, the culture outlines the perception of the society

i.e. how the person becomes ill or healthy (Auerbach et al.,
2016).

It is a well-known fact that some people are alive or dead
due to serious illness and the physicians try their best to
save them but some of them can be saved and some not.
This can be explained by taking an example of the culture of
Japan. The practice of organ transplant is very less common
in Japan as compared to other developed nations. The
people of Japan did not like to disfigure the dead bodies,
even for autopsies. Even the people of this culture did not
permit to donate the organs even when their person dies
which means that they deny designating themselves to be a
potential organ donor.

From the above discussion on the learning of the social
world through health, it can be said that culture or the
environment of society affect the social, mental, and
physical wellbeing of the individual. The concept of health is
also explained by taking the example of Japanese culture
and society affecting the health of the people.

The term wellbeing means the positive state, enclosing
health as a positive ambition. The term wellbeing is
generally related to health and Ottawa Charter in 1986 says
that health is not a thing of living but it is important to the
resource of everyday life (Health Knowledge, 2019). The
above definition is related to physical health and wellbeing
but we cannot ignore the relation of health with mental
wellbeing. The wellbeing varies from individual to individual
and there are several factors contribute to individual
wellbeing (Reis, 2018).
There are a total of 5 ways through which the wellbeing can

day and also other substances which cause mental disorder.
These people have more difficulties in accessing their

In addition to this, the condition of the people suffering from
bipolar disorder can be managed through high wellbeings
such as medication or even that person is not currently
experiencing with its symptoms. Although, it cannot be
denied that people who are suffering from mental wellbeing
are not get fully recovered the effect of the disease can be
minimized (Brooks, 2015).
